poor management, very bad experience

Senior Member of Consulting Staff (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Cadence Design Systems

ProsSome of the best technical people in the industry. Other than that, I can't think of anything worth working at Cadence.

ConsWitnessed several rounds of layoffs, and constant change of management, I feel the company is going no where. There are a lot of internal politics.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat people with respect. Reduce layers of management, reduce the number of managers, managers should also do hands on work.

Cadence needs better mid level managers

Member of Consulting Staff (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Cadence Design Systems

ProsGood work life balance
Good piers

ConsPoor management especially mid level managers
less growth opportunity.
Very less communication from the management.
Management doesn't want to recognize the good work of employees

Advice to Senior ManagementMid level managers are lots of time biased. Please pay attention to the jobs delivered by your employee rather than from where they belong to and who they are!

Work at Cadence only as a last resort.

Marketing Director (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Cadence Design Systems

ProsThere were some good people at the company and they were fairly open in sharing their knowledge and expertise. The company was still #1 in the market, which was something we could be proud of, but it was also something we knew the company couldn't maintain, so it was tough watching it slip away.

ConsTerrible management, which causes problems in all aspects of the company. Morale was so low that it was depressing to even think about going to the office each day. The culture, i.e., they environment created by top management, was one of paranoia and constant change, so no matter how good one was at a job, there was no feeling of security.

Advice to Senior ManagementSell the company.

Challenging work, challenging environment

Applications Engineer (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Cadence Design Systems

ProsThe work is challenging, good opportunities for mix of customer-facing and technical jobs. The industry is very high-paced and interesting. This is a fast-paced work environment where you get good experience, and you either learn to either sink or swim. From a technical standpoint the code is a complex product to develop, manage, and deploy for customers. In terms of working with customers, these are all business customers, and they are smart and will keep you on your toes. The sales process is very interesting, and you can engage with a wide variety of customer types that all have different styles. So, basically, there is a lot to learn from working here.

ConsLimited career advancement opportunities, little interest in developing employees. This is a "revolving door" company. Very little respect for work-life balance. No job security. Bloated layer of middle-management is wasteful. The morale is not very good. Of course, at the moment the stock price has declined 80 percent or so in the last year, so of course that hurts morale. The main issue is that their is no strategic career path here. Each business operates quite independently (caused by the growth-by-acquisition-strategy. The company is a patch-work of purchases which have their own backgrounds.) There is limited technical innovation within the company...it is all obtained through acquisition.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate a flatter organization, there are too many middle-managers. Make some minimal effort to develop employees.
