Same social dynamic as a middle school; if you weren't part of the right clique you were doomed to fail.

Server (Former Employee)

I worked at California Pizza Kitchen part-time for less than a year

ProsThe money is fantastic. Paid very low hourly, but you get to keep nearly all of your tips (just pay some out to the cooks and the hostess).

ConsYou are expected to pay for everything you need. The uniforms are very specific and you are not given an allowance or anything. You have to buy all your own shirts, pants, shoes, etc. The dissonance between management and servers is also far too much.

Advice to Senior ManagementI see a job as something professional. I did not share personal information unless asked specifically (so a non-answer would be awkward), yet I was reprimanded for how I felt about kids. in any other situation or with other people it would be a non-issue. But managers have far too much leeway and if they have a personal opinion about you that is negative, it affects how they treat you. My advice? train your managers to be more professional.

Started out great and ended with a huge disappointment in new owners Golden Gate Capital and CEO.

Manager (Former Employee)

ProsGood benefits package along with dining privilidges at most locations. Locations exist all across the country so moving and having work is good for hourly employees.

ConsBought by new owners who care only about the bottom line. Consistently want to run a restaurant with the least amount of possible labor. No employee engagement or satisfaction as long term employees with a wealth of knowledge are being shown the door. Hart to heart was a joke!

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on employee engagement and hire the best people. Select senior leadership that values employee and manager development. Staff the restaurant to meet demand and grow sales.

Pros-OK tips

Cons-Management is incompetent
-Restaurant was run like a Nazi prison camp
-Job was threatened daily

Advice to Senior ManagementListen more closely to your employees feedback AND lose the ego's about your position. Stop making decisions based on incomplete information

New CEO, corporate, and managers no longer care about employees

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at California Pizza Kitchen

ProsFun atmosphere to work in if you're working with the right people.
Delicious food.

ConsExpect you to do a lot in a VERY short amount of time.
Hard to get full-time.
Do not care about the bottom line employees that basically make the company.
They keep cutting back hours.
Lots of changes happening. Very unstable.

Advice to Senior ManagementTell the CEO and corporate that employees are extremely unhappy with the way the company is headed. Hours are being cut, and more work is expected to be done in an insanely short amount of time. Employees are starting to hate the company, and therefore, no longer care for it.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
