I have been working at Callaway Golf full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Decent pay once hired full-time

    Cons

The people in charge could not manage a little league team. While it's understood that cutting costs is essential for the sustainability of any company, how you manage those realized savings is key to to their success. The only thing that management seems to care about is lining their own pockets and those of the shareholders, not with reinvesting in the business or the people that work for them. Outdated machinery, outdated computers and software, no spare parts, constant roller coaster ride with employees and production goals, no adherence to programs, no sense of order or standards, standards differ from shift to shift. A once proud and profitable company, we are now a shell of what we once were. Glad I am on the backside of my career here. This used to be a great place to work. I often wonder if management shares in the suffering of it's employees when "profits" are down or don't meet projections.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try treating your employees as assets instead of liabilities. These hardworking people come to work everyday, in good faith, to give you a days work for a days pay, often in miserable working conditions. Their reward? Lies and layoffs. Second, how about coming up with a program and sticking with it for more than a week? Task your supervisors to keep everyone on point so everyone knows and adheres to expectations, across ALL shifts, instead of constantly having them in pointless meetings.

    I worked at Callaway Golf

    Pros

Iconic brand; frontline staff care. Good location. History of technical innovation.

    Cons

Leadership lacks vision; is unwilling to take risks; long tenured sr Ldrshp needs to go so Callaway can start fresh.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in fresh leaders who can inspire staff. HR is worthless.

I worked at Callaway Golf (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There were always dramatic changes. The constant change always kept things challenging.

Despite the difficult situation, there are actually great employees that still work for Callaway. The non-management employees were very dedicated and fun to work with.

    Cons

Lack of good/talented management and no organizational development.

There was no stability, long term strategy, or consistency in any area.

    Layoffs, layoffs, layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be good to the employees that are left.

    Pros

Opportunity for unique experiences. Neat to see things you work with everyday on TV on the weekends and feed off the energy of the pro tour. Great people.

    Cons

open door policy that blacklists you when you walk through it. If youre not in the club, youre not going anywhere. You either march to the drum or they march you out. New ideas are encouraged right up to when you offer them. Zero respect for work/life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Humility isnt weakness, its strength. Embrace the ideas of those below you.

Golf ball company moved to Mexico for more profits.

Former Employee - Reaction Injection Mold Technician in Chicopee, MA

I worked at Callaway Golf full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay was competitive with other local factories and was --- in 2005 --- a great place to work. The shifts were 12 hours but they rotated workers to prevent injuries and to supply workers with more knowledge of all aspects of the reaction injection mold department, a high-
security access area in a company of approximately 1,400 employees locally.

    Cons

As the owners shifted focus on worker safety, rewarding almost unheard of excellent production (in 3 years we almost tripled production rates while bringing 1st time pass rates from 67% to 99.2%) and the appreciation of hard working employees to focus on profits for management, stockholders and owners, the company decided to move operations to Mexico in order to pay employees 1/5th the scale of Americans who appreciated and valued their jobs and did them well!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Never discount dedicated employees with years of experience for the short-term profits stockholders seem to crave; think of the long run and share the greater profits with those who sweated and sacrificed to earn those profits in the first place.
Sure, management deserves some credit, but so did those who actually produced the 16 Million dollars ABOVE projected profits in 2010 in the Chicopee plant alone, instead of bailing out of the U.S. workers who made you said profits and moving to Mexico to save money short term.

I have been working at Callaway Golf full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

People you work with, compensation, great perks (if you enjoy golf)

    Cons

Limited advancement opportunities, poor middle management, frustrating lack of communication, not a creative environment, poor decisions continue to hurt this company, poor performance quarter after quarter

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire true project managers to manage large scale projects. Stop ridiculous spending when the company is in a 'turn-around' phase. Losing good people in favor of almost comical decisions.
