Great company, tough times as of 2010

Senior Principal Analyst (Current Employee) Carlsbad, CA

Pros1 - Great team to work with, a lot of support and very open to answer just about any question.
2 - IT open door policy.
3 - You are challenged by doing projects (if you get them).
4 - Very flexible work environment.

Cons1 - Very little or no opportunities for advancement.
2 - Very little or no raises since 2008. But it has been tough times for the company.
3 - There have been layoffs and management has tried to saved the managers (that did nothing) and throw some of the employees under the bus.
4 - Management gets benefits (iphones/ipads) even though the company is loosing money.

Advice to Senior Management1 - Do not buy stuff we do not really need. I know that Apple products are cool, but nothing says I do not care like spending a lot of money for such products while we are loosing money. If you want to promote change, show that you are diligent with your expenses.

Company was not keeping current as the industry and workforce changed

    Manager (Former Employee) Carlsbad, CA

ProsGreat people. Hopefully the recent changes to senior management at the company will make it a more progressive place to work. Benefits were good, but declining.

ConsChallenging to work in a declining industry such as golf. Non-traditional work situations rarely taken into consideration (telecommuting, job sharing, alternate work hours). There were layoffs so regularly for the last 5 years that many of the people that were great at there jobs and role models have left the company or were laid off because they were highly compensated.

Outstanding for the first 5 years until top senior management changed, especially after Mr. Callaway passed away.

Senior Manager (Former Employee) Carlsbad, CA

ProsProduct, People, Workplace Environment, Benefits, Salary, Learning Opportunity

ConsVery Political at the Sr. VP and up level. Lots of backstabbing and turf wars which was so disappointing considering the level of talent and ability at that level. Stock options to VPs / CEO too lucrative and caused decisions to be made based on what it would take to get short-term results / stock performance rather than what was best for consistent, long-term shareholder growth. While I was there (about 8 years) the entire Senior Management Team (about 25 individuals holding VP or higher positions) turnover was over 400%. This was clearly another problem that caused this type of decision making to occur.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhere is the accountability at the wholly-owned sub. top management level? SKUs have quintupled over the last 8 years, yet revenues / profitability have dropped below levels where SKUs, company-wide were 1/5 of what they are now. Why are these individuals still running the major international market sales companies?

    Good employer

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) San Diego, CA

Prosfamily oriented environment, great brand, casual pace

Conscasual pace, budgets tight, not a ton of development opportunities outside of those growing out of entry level jobs

Advice to Senior Managementimplement more progressive ideas/programs for your employees.

Callaway was a great place to work.....in the current times...it is an O.K place to work

Inside Sales (Former Employee) Carlsbad, CA

ProsSelling golf clubs for the number 1 brand in golf is a pretty easy close. Benefits and pay are good. I made a lot of friends at the company. If you golf they offer discounts on golf clubs.

ConsCurrently the golf industry is hurting. Golf course shops and retail are struggling to stay open. In 2009 there were a lot of lay offs at Callaway. A couple of years ago management wanted you to succeed and offered growth and advancement opportunties. Now management treats employees like cattle and doesnt bother with career pathing. Also the company has become more micro managed. As far as vacation time, there is none.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement should realize the value in customer service and inside sales. Inside sales should have more recognition. Management should offer a better solution to manage vacation time.
