    Pros

Job security. Some of the people.

    Cons

Old boys network; terrible management/leadership except for the CEO. But then again, he is in charge of this culture.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits for Portland market. Some good people who needed a paycheck landed there. Good location for bike commuting from east or west side. Close to downtown and river front so you can get away from the office as often as you like (and you'll need that).

    Cons

Finance is managed by former consultants and others with no formal finance training or experience, with hilarious results. There is a lot of made up stuff that you wouldn't find in any other finance department anywhere and will leave you shaking your head. Lack basic controls so they have an army of people whose only job seems to be to find mistakes and create a pool of people they can fire when anything goes wrong. In short, they haven't a clue what they're doing. The work is not meaningful and there are no clear roles and responsibilities. The top guys in finance like to order people around and are constantly reorganizing and changing your responsibilities without a care what employees think. Turnover is high. Morale is low. Overall the company is hemorrhaging cash in their core business all the while investing huge sums (hundreds of millions) on goofy health apps that nobody uses and other pet projects of the top executives. Non-profit healthcare has huge profits that they have to spend on frivolous things instead of reducing premiums, so it's a huge contributor to the cost of healthcare in this country. So don't be fooled by the "non-profit" banner and all the advertising about how "member-focused" they are. They have an army of people dedicated to reducing what claims they'll pay and they could care less about people and their medical conditions. It's a national shame.

    Pros

The office is convenient to mass transit. The company promotes commuting by bike, and healthy lifestyles. Nearly all worker bees are highly competent, amiable, professional, and caring people.

    Cons

Employee development is spotty, some groups value it and others don't give it a second thought. Management coaching does not occur until after one year, which is especially troubling for new people managers managing new employees. There is no new employee orientation, and team building events are rare. The employee handbook does not require managers to create training and development plans or administer performance improvement plans; many employees write their development plans after-the-fact. Fully successful reviews can be followed within a few weeks by termination notice for lame and changing reasons (they are in cost-cutting mode this month). This cycle repeats itself every year. Leadership abilities of VPs and EVPs range greatly. I wouldn't follow some to the cafeteria, while I'd follow others into a lopsided military campaign. Although the company has a telecommute policy, many employees are expected to work in the office to justify a recent renovation, which turned 9' x 6' cubicles with 6' walls into 6' x 6' cubicles with 3' walls. Picture yourself in a overpopulated petting zoo while trying to talk on the phone. I witnessed wasted resources...$50k purchase of software that was never used and projects with 1000+ hours of effort before being abandoned due to politics. Agile project management is a hit and miss effort. Novel ideas are discouraged if you are not a long-term or "connected" employee. This is a target rich environment for grad school business cases. I had much higher job satisfaction and sense of accomplishment as a contractor.

    Advice to Management

Never (ever) allow direct managers without experience, training, or coaching to come in contact with other human beings. If the required skills for a position change prior to the 9 month minimum for transfer, help people find places to land instead of kicking them out the door.

    Pros

Benefits are good. Work/Life balance id ok only if you are assertive.

    Cons

Most of the people in this company are old time employees. So they try to form an old boys club and then boycott anyone who is a threat to them. Most of the managers don't have the management skill...they just became managers in lieu of their tenure in the company. They do not provide opportunities to grow and do not give proper feedback to improvise on a timely basis. They will just wait and then give all the feedback or rather say let loose their thoughts and opinions in the performance review. They will write anything and everything in a way in which they like...no code or ethics to be followed. In a nut shell they can do whatever they want and manipulate their actions in every possible way. Best thing is that the upper management does not mind all this at all !! If the manager has a grudge or disliking towards you then they will do their best to pull you down. Avoid the company !!!

    Advice to Management

Do not act blind to employee concerns. Follow proper work ethics and provide good management training to the managers and overall promote people who are really worthy and fit to become managers in all respects instead of seniority.

    Pros

there are no pros here other than if you need a paycheck and can tolerate high stress and game playing by supervisors

    Cons

pay is lower than average for same positions elsewhere, low raises, dishonest management which is constantly changing (some fired, some quit), low moral due to being treated poorly, total chaos constantly because supervisors don't know what they are doing, list goes on and on... bad technology and systems, high stress and no reward. They preach ethics and don't have any.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to get involved in what is really going on at individual levels. Total incompetence running the show and screwing people over. Employees who have done great work for many years are tossed out like the trash. Company promotes remote workers then fires them all to save money.

    Pros

They gave me a chance for few weeks.

    Cons

I was let go because some of my colleagues complained that I am too abrupt when I talk, and one of the colleagues twisted what I said about some of the opportunities out there. My supervisor decided to listen to my peers over my words. She was determined to fire me from week one as she did not think I will fit into the department culture. I was told on my last day that there is a paycheck in the envelope they gave me. I didn't even check it before I left the building as I trusted that there will be a paycheck in there. I came home to only learn that there is no paycheck, only a pay stub of how much I should received. I never got kicked out of a company without getting paid. This is my first!

    Pros

The biggest pro is that its a job (I know a several people who don't have one). They pay livable wages and offer health and life insurance. The actual work isn't that hard most of the time. The management has improved after some retirements.

    Cons

The pecking order has been set for a very long time and it never changes. Regardless of how well I do my job, I'm never going to get promoted because I'm not one of the "chosen" ones. There's not much respect and it wears you down. You can't trust management.

    Advice to Management

When it's time to replace underwriting management, hire someone from outside the company who will be fair.

    Pros

Can work remote which saves two hours per day commute time.

    Cons

benefits have been looted in the past five years. management does not value or respect employees, not just IT, company wide. this company is a perverted manifestation of what traditional blue cross blue shield organization were founded to represent.

    Advice to Management

Replace top level management from Mark Ganz all the way down to the manager leve. Restore respect and decency when it comes to the treatment of staff. Stop laying off and out-sourcing to save money while demanding extraordinary perfomrance from the reduced staff.
