ProsStable company. Matches charitable donations by 50%. Pockets of excellent people. Doing incredibly innovative things to change healthcare.

ConsHypocritical values. What's written and displayed are contradictory. Behavior displayed by some executives sets a dysfunctional and dis respective tone through parts of the organization. IT is appalling.

Advice to Senior ManagementOpen your eyes and be accountable. There are talented people whose work environments are highly dysfunctional making work life stressful and unproductive.

Not a good time to be working in the healthcare field.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsPay and benefits were good.

ConsAtmosphere tense, working spaces tiny and loud although many work from home. Technology and software old and outdated and causing problems with the business

Advice to Senior ManagementAddress the problems of outdated systems head on. Be more innovative and support innovation to fix the problems in the company. Going back to the old ways is not working.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Cambia looks best in your rear view mirror.

    Manager (Former Employee)
    Portland, OR

ProsThe pay and benefits are on par with other Blue Cross companies, which are a little better than what you get at smaller carriers. The Portland and Seattle offices are right downtown, which I liked (don't know much about the SLC and Boise offices). The online training courses let you get familiar with a wide variety of software apps. There aren't many positions that require much hard work or brains. The company seems to be dumbing down the work as much as possible. If you're barely competent and quietly swallow your weekly ration of disrespect, you can usually hang around making a decent living for several years. If you have a talent for office politics, you can be a superstar. It also appears the Online Reputation staff is keeping themselves busy (hi guys!).

ConsIt is the insurance business, which isn't very exciting, and the technology is always a hot mess. There are entirely too many weasels and weaselettes including managers who sabotage their own people. Between the politics and sloppy work ethics, it's frustrating when you need cooperation to do your job. There have been several rounds of restructuring and layoffs over the years. Lately the restructuring includes centralizing functions across state lines. Departments that used to be local, self-contained enterprises are getting more layers of management located in other states. That means more conference calls every week and reporting to (and getting judged by) weasels you rarely see. And in the back of your mind, you never know which functions are getting outsourced next.

Advice to Senior ManagementSince I'm not working there any more, I'm cool with the way management is doing things. The insurance part of Cambia is a dinosaur with an outdated culture that refuses to change. I say keep outsourcing as much as you can and make your profits by investing in new companies.

    A Zoo.

    ProsCompensation was good. Great bonuses.

ConsThey have a huge code base writen by short term contractors so it is all over the place. There is no time to learn the monsterous systems and no one has time to train you, but you will definantly have deadlines. You'd better make a short term messy fix, against all best practices and common sense, but what else can you do?

Advice to Senior ManagementTrain new hires. I someone comes on board, give them time to learn the code base on thier own, or have the team offer training, othewise new hires are lost at best or worse ineffectual

Dreary work propelled by a lack of vision

    QA Analyst (Current Employee)
    Portland, OR

    ProsSome opportunities for working remotely
Salary is comparable to other companies in the industry

ConsLong term employees are rooted in old ways of thinking, lack of clarity as to job expectations (i.e. I was expected to design my own job, but got castigated when it somehow did not meet undocumented expectations), "cliquish" behavior among groups of female employees

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide a clearer vision and encourage out of the box thinking

    In transition

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsDecent work/life balance. Big intellectual challenges to solve. Change is constant and can be very energizing. Some parts of the organization are structured to work through change and many others are not yet ready for the changes that need to be made nor how often they will need to be made. Significant changes need to be created, embraced and driven from the top down for this company to be successful.

ConsVery political. Decisions are not made based on facts and what is best course of action but rather based on politics. Male-driven culture. Lack of respect for lower-levels within organization. Unprofessional communication goes unnoticed even when negatively impacting teams.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommit to a real vision and a concrete strategy. Even in uncertain times for healthcare, know who you are and sell what makes you strong. Make the key decisions and lead.

Good stepping stone... Very very high turnover.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsFlextime and 401k fully vested with 11% match and vacation time

ConsFinace will work you to death and only promote the people in the good old boy club.

Advice to Senior ManagementFinance senior leadership needs to recognize the high turnover rate and resolve the underlying issues with favoritism if they want to keep top talent.
