    Good Company

    Electrical Engineering Intern (Current Employee)
    Fort McMurray, AB (Canada)

ProsGood people, great pay, food is not too bad in the camp and great work experience

ConsWorking in the camp can get boring after a while. Lacks proper training before job begins. Students are thrown into the mix.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter training/support system for the students would be nice.

Overall a very good place to work as a student intern

    Engineering Co-op Student (Current Employee)
    Fort McMurray, AB (Canada)

ProsGreat place to gain insight and knowledge of the oil and gas industry. People are friendly and helpful. You will be given real responsibilities and projects that will impact directly the workings of the plant. Hence, it is a very good learning experience.

ConsLong work hours (6:30am-4:30pm). Lack of an established program in place to develop students into knowledgeable engineers.

Coop intern at CNRL - Calgary

    (Former Employee)
    Calgary, AB (Canada)

    Pros- flexible hours
    - good work/life balance
    - good compensation
    - excellent guidance from supervisor
    - prompt feedback of quality of work
    - comprehensive work term reviews
    - relocation assistance

Cons- Relatively long process to getting access to certain software/programs in the office setting for student interns, which means for a short work term, you may not get to experience higher level tasks since access to programs would not be granted on time

Enjoyed my work there, given a lot more responsibility and experience than what other companies offer.

    Relief Operator (Former Employee)

Prosgood pay, lots of experience, helpful coworkers

Conssome parts weren't organized well (lack of communication from management), somewhat of a "redneck" culture

Advice to Senior Managementbetter communication to ground level employees

A very good opportunity for a student to gain field experience.

    Relief Operator (Former Employee)
    Fox Creek, AB (Canada)

ProsEarly and thorough safety training: First Aid, H2S, Safe Driving, ATV, WHMIS, TDG, Site Supervisor.
If you proved the ability and attitude to work safely, you gained some autonomy.
Amiable and knowledgeable co-workers answered all questions.
Other operators and mechanics were good to work with.
    Overtime.

ConsSome safety administration took a back seat to production.
Movement of personnel within the company meant that I had to assume full operator responsibilities early.

Great compensation in a company with many opportunities.

    Materials Management (Former Employee)
    Fort McMurray, AB (Canada)

ProsLaid back management, great compensation, great benefits. The company is a well run organization that will have success in the long run.

ConsRemote location, long shifts. This job is not cut out for everyone but if you can handle long shifts and the remote location I recommend working here.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to keep the employees happy or you will not have anyone willing to work in such a remote location.

    Pros-great benefits
