    Pros

Great team members and most of team leaders

    Cons

Long hours, treated like dirt, upper management don't have time for you. No bonuses. Can't progress or move to a different department.

    Advice to Management

Stop letting your best staff leave. Improve bonuses and better shifts

    Pros

Money available for people prepared to demonstrate that they are indispensable. Big and complex projects provide room to grow as a technical professional as there will always be problems to solve if you put your mind to it. Don't expect any recognition for this however.

    Cons

Teams are divided by an impenetrable wall of managers. All the business' clerical functions such as payroll are disorganised, pitifully slow and poorly communicated. Roles and responsibilities are poorly-defined and warnings about lack of direction are ignored.

    Advice to Management

Find out how things are supposed to work, or fix them when they don't, and convey this to employees. Recognise technical ability as well as social climbing. Take some care to figure out what an employee is supposed to be doing and who is meant to support them before parachuting them into a role.

    Pros

They allow you to work fairly autonomous and encourage trying new things and improving processes, usually a large amount of varied work to be involved in.

    Cons

Lack of personal growth opportunities readily available, lack of progression. This wasn't specific to the team but rather the strict rules of the organisation on the whole - leading to loss of talent.

    Advice to Management

Re-consider progression and compensation rules to encourage staff retention rather then allowing experienced staff to leave and spending more money to hire someone new.

  5. Good within my subsidiary but problems within wider organisation

    I worked at Capita

    Pros

Good development practices, such as Agile, tdd pair programming etc. Forward thinking about technologies. Good office culture.

    Cons

Being bought by Capita, not putting pay rises in line with the rate at which an employees market rate increases.

    Advice to Management

Less corporate, more of a focus on technology and bear in mind you are competing against other companies in a market which is in a huge demand for good developers.

    KPI's not great

    Pros

Well laid out HR policies and processes.
They paid for an external course that was relevant to the role.

    Cons

Our unit was based in Dublin and had very limited interaction with the wider Capita organisation. Overall I felt that Capita was the name on the monthly bank transfers but not much more. People felt like they worked for the client organisation almost more than Capita.

    Pros

Are willing to give opportunities to current employees.
They have their fingers in lots of different pies so huge variation of opportunities.

    Cons

Pay is not great compared to some companies and getting a pay rise when moving internally can be very difficult and a long drawn out process (there's a long standing myth about maximum pay rise being 10% even when changing roles, but it's only a myth as my last pay rise was around 30%, you just have to stick it out and keep pursuing it if you really want it).
The different departments and business units often operate as totally different entities and there is often no level of co-operation.

    Advice to Management

Make it easier for current employees to get the pay rise they deserve. I think the current policy actually encourages the best employees to leave rather than work their way up in the business
