    Pros

People really stick to the core values of the firm. Every discussion revolves around ensuring that shareholders are served well. The integrity of CG associates is excellent, and there is always an effort to ensure that project leaders engage across functions to make the best decisions possible. The company has been around for 80 years, and has earned its reputation as an upstanding long-term investment firm.

    Cons

Conservatism and team-focused efforts have a dark side: they keep folks from getting things done. I found management often unable to make a decision out of fear that they had somehow not gotten buy-in from every potential party. The 80/20 rule doesn't exist there--you have to run decisions and potential actions by every single person who might be affected. Risk tolerance is zero, which hampers the ability to move quickly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower associates to make decisions and have responsibility/accountability. Lots of smart folks lack opportunities at CG because management is too tied up in details to pay attention and help them develop.

I have been working at Capital Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great compensation with two yearly bonuses and above normal pay for area. Perks include retirement plan and fee-free access to company services.

    Cons

IT Leadership is focused on outsourcing jobs. You train your replacements from a third party. IT leadership takes forever to make a decision and the engineering group has more power and influence over IT direction because their director has sold himself as a "technology guy" simply because he brought an iPad to work 4 years ago. The company likes to pride itself on its history to the world but inside its a mommy dearest scenario.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the concerns of the rank and file. Sills of the future is inferred as look for a new job and get ready to train your offshore replacement.

    I worked at Capital Group

    Pros

Good benefits, nice coworkers, office furnishings

    Cons

    Mismanaged, competitive environment, highly political

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should be honest and cease defining Capital Group as one that values hardworking associates and tenure, and as one that doesn't advertise and promote itself. Layoffs not only occurred in 2009 due to market conditions but also recently in February 2014 (approx. 20 positions eliminated and many others reassigned) in L.A., due to new CMS and workflow methodologies, even before their full implementation ... with no promise that layoffs won't happen again (per upper management). Despite handling increasing work volume, intense marketing/advertising efforts to reposition the company, and "rebranding" all print and online content, many associates who carried the day and helped turn the company around post-2009 were simply let go. Admit that the younger "new blood" in management has transformed the respectful culture of the past into a frenzied, competitive, ordinary slave-driving work environment, to do more with less people. You also send a signal that associates are disposable by immediately replacing some eliminated positions with contractors. I advise that you maintain the same good benefits offering, as this is the main reason associates tough it out in the new culture.
