    Great, for the most part

    Service Manager (Current Employee)

ProsCarmax has a positive atmosphere overall and rewards its associates well for great performance. The company has many perks for high performing stores. Carmax also promotes internally when possible.

ConsSupervisor asking to me to take care of customers then upset when consumerism line is overspent. Other managers often send upset customers to my department with issues they could resolve on their own.

ProsNice people to work with. Never had an issue really with anyone

ConsOnly bad thing is they lie alot when trying to get people to work. Say there is room to grow when there isnt and raises which dont happen.

Not the best place to grow your career (Home Office)

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Richmond, VA

    ProsGreat work life balance
    Great people

ConsVery difficult to move up because the organization is extremely flat.
Pay is below average for Home Office (they believe the great work life balance makes up for that, I would not agree)
Very inflexible in regards to work from home or telecommute (this is virtually not an option except to put in over time)
MAP (management assessment program) is a waste of time. Forces Home Office employees through a process that really should only apply to the field

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize that there is talent within the Home Office in addition to the field. Seems like the only way to move up in the company is to go to the field. You could gain equal experience by working on projects in the field without ever having to work at the store full-time

Great place by traditional dealership standards

    Sales Consultant (Current Employee)
    Indianapolis, IN

ProsGreat health and dental benefits. CarMax is great place to work for by corrupt dealership standards.

ConsCars are showing signs of decline in quality. Most cars are over priced. The average full time sales associate is over worked and under paid.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on value and keep prices competitive. Retain dedicated associates with adequate pay.

ProsContinuous learning, great job with the feedback and the willingness to help all associates regardless of the team they are on

ConsRetail hours can be difficult to schedule family time when a spouse works normal business hours. There are no other cons

Great company, products, nice benefits package

    Sales Consultant (Current Employee)
    Philadelphia, PA

ProsLots of opportunity if you don't expect everything handed to you on a silver platter AND don't expect it overnight. On-going training to enhance your business. We work hard and play hard. Love company integrity and philosophy. Great benefits. Super atmosphere. Awesome team. Customer service centered business.

ConsWorking lots of evenings and weekends, but understand necessity due to customer traffic. I knew schedule going in. Company does not reimburse for cell phone (a must for biz) and requires employees to purchase all of their own uniforms.

Advice to Senior ManagementSales Managers work long hours and are assigned a team of consultants to lead. I believe there should be more Sales Managers in the store to alleviate heavy schedule and allow more time for development of associates. I fear burnout for SM's causing company to lose some really great leaders. Also feel commission compensation should be increased across the board for all consultants. It's time!
