Great Company but the IT Department has Leadership Challenges.

    Pros

The company is wonderful to work for. It has great values, training, and development opportunities. The people are wonderful.

    Cons

The IT leadership needs to be refreshed. There is very much a good old boys club in the organization. If you are not part of the club then you will never advance. The existing leadership makes poor decisions in staffing, software and hardware, and overall direction. The current leadership has been with the company since they were part of Circuit City and have very stale ideas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company needs some new IT management.

    Pros

It can feel very rewarding to get someone in a car. Whether it's a young person getting their own car for the first time, or someone with challenging credit. You CAN make some decent money, but it's very unpredictable due to commission only pay. The company does try to give you a diverse work schedule (it's retail after all) by giving you a 3 day weekend off every 6 weeks. But your schedule changes constantly. Decent benefits.

    Cons

Management are full of themselves. They have many methods in place to help "develop" you...code for micro-manage. They definitely have favorites and play to that. Work/life balance is somewhat up to you. If you choose to answer your phone on your day off and potentially go in to close a sale...that's up to you. Or you can split it. But it's a constant mental struggle to take your days off or feel like you're losing money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop talking down to the sales staff as if they have no skill. Why did you hire them? Quit playing favorites.

    Pros

The store managers and regional people are largely great people. Home office is nice-good location. The retailer is trying to do the right thing in how used cars are sold and customers are treated well.

    Cons

Cliquish ol boy network runs the place. Lots of favors and support for each other but if you are not in that clique or in the stores, then you get nothing. Huge focus on operations; no value on soft skills or talent. HR leaders are very political.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider the optics of your cliquish and good ol boy behaviors.

    Pros

Im a student so the tuition reimbursement was great. Great people at the location I worked at. Ability to get raises with certifications.

    Cons

As inventory associate you have to answer to every department in carmax which can be hectic. It is very fast paced so if you're more of the laid back worker than this position is not for you.

Current Employee - Service Manager in Woodbridge, VA

    Pros

Good training, time off is flexible, lots of free food, generally good people working there, not too many idiots

    Cons

Oppressively structured, the feedback becomes intolerable at a certain point, too many people drinking the kool-aid. You're just selling cars. The pay is not competitive with a "traditional dealership".

    Cons

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Relaxed working environment. Genuinely nice co-workers and no jerks. Semi-flexible work hours. Company invests in associates and wants to help them grow. Company is expanding and looks to grow for many years to come.

    Cons

Executive leadership team has grown complacent. Store growth is nice but internal processes and IT are stagnant. Far too many meetings. Current leadership has too much top-down micro management at the moment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set goals for your associates and empower them to solve problems. Focus on hiring 'A' players and give them guidance rather than a list of instructions.

Former Employee - Business Office Associate  in  Norcross, GA
Former Employee - Business Office Associate in Norcross, GA

    Pros

You can make a decent hourly wage in the Business Office. They work around your busy schedule and you will receive hands on training.

    Cons

You usual will not receive your schedule for the upcoming week (Monday- Sunday) until Sunday. They expect you to learn your duties while your trainer doesn't have time to show you. You will be expected to work all holidays. You will also work in a chaotic environment where your manager can not even multi task or meet the needs of the business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your associates concerns and focus less on drama and maybe the Norcross location will have less employees quit.
