I have been working at CarMax

    Pros

Excellent benefits (health, dental, vision, 401K); community & team building, great opportunity for those w/ strong work ethic & right skill set. Training in sales is solid & ongoing.

    Cons

One slip can immediately cost your job. People disappear without chance to say goodbye. Corporate loyalty was lacking when a top sales person was tricked by an undercover reporter they fired him (after 7 years dedicated service) without warning.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate should show more care and loyalty to staff.

As an entry level associate it's a fun place to work and a great way to learn basic sales skills.

I have been working at CarMax full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great culture and teamwork. Great entry level training for sales associates. Part Time Sales has to be one of the best part time jobs available today, if you don't mind working evenings and Saturdays. CarMax makes it relatively easy to sell cars and provide excellent customer service. If you like to be micro managed you will love CarMax!

    Cons

Again, great place to work, as long as you do not have ambitions for promotion. I'd love to share my experience, but if I describe in a manner that one could validate, I fear Management will realize who I am and retaliate against me for writing this review. I would be labeled as someone who is a troublemaker. The way I interpret company policy, we are not allowed to discuss CarMax unless it is the script we are given. If you are an "Associate" and you want to get into management you will be given months and months of difficult and challenging tasks with no pay. This takes time away from sales, which reduces your production. Then when a new boss comes along, you don't get promoted because you are labeled as not being able to sell. You are told that as an associate your opinion counts. This is true as long as your opinion is the same as management. If not, then there is a high risk you will be labeled a troublemaker and be shunned. To make 50k in full time sales I have to work 50-60 hours a week and I'm in "Club" Level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have some respect for your sales people's time please. Don't lead associates on. It's just not fair. Management training is not calibrated and very overwhelming. The decision to promote turns out to be motivated by politics and the personal agenda of the key decision maker(s) instead of merit. Sr Management should never hire a Sales Manager who has never made a living on straight commission, these type of managers care much more about the process than they do people because they have no idea what it is like to make a living on straight commission and are only interested in taking credit for their subordinates success and covering their you know what.

I have been working at CarMax part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible with work-life balance and not middle-managed.

    Cons

Could improve on customer database management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

improve database tools for salesperson use. Internal path for promotion a long road, many hired from outside over you.

    Pros

The best opportunity I have had in a very long career to learn "What good looks like". You will compare all of your future companies to CarMax because it sets the gold standard for how employees should be treated with respect.

    Cons

Few people are ever satisfied with the amount of money they earn, CarMax is no exception.

I have been working at CarMax full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great company to work for! Friendly work atmosphere and truly a work place with fellow associates who care about quality of work.

    Cons

Work load for middle management to high for the amount paid. Sr. Managers are paid a lot more than entry or middle management, and the quality of Sr. Management work at times makes the salary difference between levels hard to understand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay the entry and middle management more. You will get better quality work from them if you do.

    Pros

The best reason to work there is that you get paid on commision which means you get what you give

    Cons

Long hours are a con also the sales atmosphere isn't for everyone also there's high turnover rates there at carmax so you have to take that into account

I have been working at CarMax full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

CarMax has continuously tried to improve themselves. The company management is open to feedback from the line level associates. The training programs and focus are top notch and are geared towards growing and developing the talented team members. The best thing working at CarMax was the work life balance if you are a Manager. They have a "Time Away" policy that is very flexible.

    Cons

You can cap out in compensation and obtaining a promotion can be difficult if you are not able to relocate. You can be branded at CarMax as "not a growth candidate" making it near impossible to grow your carrer. CarMax has become extremely process driven to the point that any deviation from the process is highly frowned upon and I feel this decreased the associates ability to make decisions.

    Pros

The company has a very diverse atmosphere, flexible working schedules (retail hours), knowledgeable about the fair market value of vehicles, informative about vehicles, good incentive programs, and 100 plus stores if you wanted to relocate.

    Cons

Promotions are very, very, very, very, difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To many insecure managers but if you get with the right click you will have minimum issues and concerns.
