Political, volatile, revenue driven...but mostly good people

I worked at CareFusion full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Most of the people are first rate. The wages and benefits are average for San Diego, the location is great, and the products and services are best in market, and "CareFusion" looks great on a resume.

    Cons

As a spinoff from Cardinal Health in 2009, CareFusion is still trying to figure much of itself out.
Add staff, cut staff, add staff, cut staff...
No stock purchase program. No annual revenue share. And the 2% subjective employee bonus and 401k match are fairly pitiful.
New product release timing is more important than it actually working as intended.
Politically, favoritism is rampant. The saturation of Director level + above (and even at the manager level) having been placed in their position owing more to relationship than skillset is pretty high.
Watching good employees leave in droves, or be cut in a RIF because they were on the wrong side of the political fence, is something that should be considered before you apply.
Very little trust between employee and manager. "Open and honest 2-way communication" is purely lip service.
If you are constantly adaptive within the ongoing change management, and know how to tell people what they want to hear, and cover your rear well, you will do fine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be careful in your pursuit of doing more with less.

    Pros

    Cons

sweat shop, get that next call, from the top down, managers, supervisors, V.P. get that next call, if you got one put it on the back burner and get that next call, then it's hey customer called that you have not fixed problem whats taking you so long.

I worked at CareFusion full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - The company corners the market and always has customers
    - Good pay
    - Big company with lots of resources
    - Good benefits
    - Easy to stand out and do a good job

    Cons

    - Lots of people who only think about themselves and their career and won't lift a finger unless it directly affects them
    - Somewhat disorganized, not run like a tight ship
    - Many people don't care about the job, the product, or their coworkers
    - Brown nosing is rewarded as much or more than hard work
    - The good people often get let go and they keep the drones

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the revolving door hiring and lay offs. Managers need to keep their employees for more time instead of always having to train new ones.

    Pros

Work Environment and Pay was not great but good. Overall I was satisfied with my compensation package. My coworkers were great, helpful and were good. Allowed me to work with a variety of individuals at all levels of the organization. Good business community.

    Cons

No motivation whatsoever you get from Manager. Manager does not trust her team instead likes contractors. I think encouraging good work is a way to boost the employee's morale. Supportive work environment is essential for an employee to make significant contributions to the company. In my case, unfortunately, that lacked and left me no choice but to quit my job, although I loved the technical aspect of it. Upper Management does not have time to listen to your concerns. Huge employee turnover in this IT team compared to any other IT teams (Total 10 people left under this manager and 4 people in last four months).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great place to work "Except" in IT Operation Team. Advice to management - stop employee turnover in this team.

I worked at CareFusion as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Good stability. Strong hierarchical management structure limits upward mobility. Everyone is very busy, but effectiveness is questionable. Overall, bureaucratic and sluggish management style is traditionally resistant to change, but could use a very strong dose of entrepreneurial problem solving infusion.

    Cons

Cross-organizational culture is stagnant at best with little synergy. Most teams are too large to actually solve critical problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider using hands-on evangelists with authority to select small effective laser focused teams for problem solving. Otherwise, there are generally too many team players working the same problems with little or no effect. Additionally, there is too much wash, rinse and reuse of routine documentation for effective management tools and guidelines. A 360 degree process between design, supply-chain and manufacturing to invoke true continual improvement will go a long way.

    Pros

Good benefits, day-to-day work culture is trending up (some of the improvements put in place earlier are coming to fruition)

    Cons

Management team is weak, mostly due to reporting structure being in a constant state of flux. There are reorgs for reorgs, and the company can't seem to find a hierarchy it likes. Senior management seem to prefer their direct reports to be spineless yes-people.

I worked at CareFusion full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Benefits are good, typical for a larger company. 401k is decent but not as good as it used to be. Competetive pay and PTO. The relaxed dress code is nice.

    Cons

Leadership is weak. In my group (enterprise software development), software developers were being promoted to manager and even director positions, with lack of qualifications and no formal management training whatsoever. By the time I left my entire department was being run by a bunch of newbie, clueless managers. This REALLY brought morale down and people were leaving the group in droves. Just goes to show if you've got enough smoke and mirrors you can get anywhere in this company. But if you want a steady job in a pretty decent corporate environment and you can tolerate the knuckleheads running the show then this place will do.

    Pros

Big company, lots of room to advance. Pay is decent, but hard to get more than 2% raise. Lots of people promoted to senior positions with little to no mgmt. skill.

    Cons

Management is top heavy, very commited to pleasing Wall Street, lots of small layoffs, no one below Manager level is safe

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A happy workforce is a productive workforce. Pick one management philosophy and stick with it.
