    Could be a great company

    Production Manager (Former Employee)

ProsPay and people are great. Even being a union plant most of the people want to do the right thing.

ConsManagement has no idea on how to operate a plant efficiently. They brought all new management and they ran it in the ground. While I was there we had two record years...those days are long gone. Always wanting people to move.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire people with proven track records. Not people who know they are not qualified.

    Undervalued and under appreciated

Senior IT Technical Analyst (Current Employee)
    Hopkins, MN

ProsThe best thing about working here is the average workers. Cargill hires some great people that are intelligent, loyal, and great all-around people to work with - the unfortunate aspect is Cargill under values them.

The company overall is a large contributor the community and seems to have strong ethical values.

ConsRecently the company decided to outsource 900 jobs to a third party provider, they've yet to learn that some of the issues that they desire to fix with these actions isn't going to work. This has been tried in smaller scales before and resulted in worse service for the businesses. There is constant changes and attempts to fix the issues, the only thing consistent has been the leadership staff, anyone else see the problem here?

Advice to Senior ManagementParticularly for senior leadership, it's time to recognize your own mistakes and failures and accept responsibility for your actions. Have enough honor and pride to hold yourselves to the same level of expectations that you'd expect from subordinates.

Awful- unreliable company. Don't work here!!!!! They will lay you off instantaneously or ask you to relocate.

    Inventory Planner (Current Employee)
    Gainesville, GA

    ProsDon't need to work hard

ConsPay. Getting laid off after three weeks of being there. Never told any of this during the interview process.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe kinder to your employees and let them know before they accept the position that there to get laid off. Karma will bite you soon and hope you lose your job one day too mgt.

Cargill: women get run over by the male promotion chain

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsBetter job security than most.

ConsThe male (and particularly white male) promotion train runs strong. Just look at the announcements. Apparently nourishing the world is something only men know how to do. They talk about wanting to thrive as a business and in the community. You can't thrive at the expense of others.

Advice to Senior ManagementNothing more to say, they aren't paying attention.

Insular Environment, Sycophants Rewarded, Tenure Valued Above all Else

    Operations Manager (Former Employee)
    Townshipin Cities, MN

ProsLarge organization; very longstanding presence. Global operations - so potential opportunity to experience work in various portions of the globe.

ConsTenure is valued FAR more than anything else. Many senior leaders have been in their roles for many, many years - a result of their having been promoted well beyond their capabilities. However, the Cargill culture is that "If you've been with the company 20+ years, you MUST be a good guy..." Conversely, if you've come from outside the company, your talents, efforts, actual results (should anyone bother to notice those) are discounted. After all, if you've not been there a couple of decades, you're simply assumed to be clueless.

I've worked for a number of multi-billion-dollar public companies - and Cargill, or at least the portion of it that I experienced, has by far the weakest, most insecure, least professional, and most inbred management team of all.

I cannot, in good conscience, recommend Cargill as an employer. Join at your own risk!

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn how to recognize, and to value, actual performance. Sycophants and long-tenured mediocrities are only going to take the organization so far. While recognition of actual capabilities and performance will require some insight, effort, and competence on your part, the organization will benefit.

You've suffered a significant talent flight in recent years.....ever wonder why that is?

HORRIBLE experience. Workload unbearable and unrealistic.

    Strategic Sourcing Manager (Current Employee)
    Minneapolis, MN

    ProsThe salary was phenomenal.
The travel was amazing. Was a super generous company, but now due to company's poor performance, they have "hunkered down," where these fringe benefits go away.

ConsI did the job of 3 people. It is truly impossible to be "caught up," and everything is always urgent and pressing. Too many competing priorities creates a stressful environment. Not only that, but you have too many managers as you report to your business unit manager and then to other managers of business units you support/service on a dotted line basis.

Would definitely never recommend this company to anyone.

Advice to Senior ManagementI accepted the position at Cargill because I loved their 4 pillars - with the top one being Employee Engagement and Profit being the last or 4th. I don't understand how in such a short time, this whole pillar concept flipped upside down with no regard to employee engagement. Now, it's just about the profits. What Cargill once stood for - employee engagement - has gone away. Now, Cargill is just another company just like any other. I believe that Cargill was among the top 100 places to work recently b/c of the employee engagement concept. I think that will quickly change.
