Ideal job for self-loathing/deluded high school students and college graduates alike

Barista (Current Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I have been working at Caribou Coffee part-time for less than a year

ProsYou get the euphoric pleasure of washing toilets and other people's dirty dishes.

ConsWorkers are not allowed to call in sick or miss a scheduled shift unless they plan ahead and get someone else to take their shift. Obviously, practically no one (unless they're William Faulkner on a drinking binge) can predict when they will be ill and need to be absent.

Rest breaks are strongly discouraged by fellow workers & are not mentioned by management. This might be your cup of tea if you're one of "those ladies" who likes to apologize before asking to use the restroom or getting a drink of water.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide your workers with greater compensation... the free coffee doesn't make up for it.

Good learning, Zero career growth

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Caribou Coffee

ProsNice people; good project diversity; casual work environment; great coffee and expertise in coffee (best by far here!); good fit for someone looking for entry level experience and a challenging work environment very early in their career.

ConsVery strong politics, lack of alignment and a lot of backstabbing at Sr. Leadership level and below, lack of accountability and collaboration (these same leaders keep getting promoted), no ability to grow below more sr. Leadership (huge watch-out if you want to grow), terrible and antiquated systems. Take a close look at their benefits and be careful w/ promises made during the interviewing process; I would not recommend if you are a professional who is interested in growing and advancing.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn to care about your employees just like the level of connection your expect of team members in the field. Listen to employee feedback, surveys, and don't ignore customer feedback. Avoid treating employees like they are expected to give, give and give to the company, while getting nothing back.

Fun job, horrible company.

Team Member (Former Employee)
West Fargo, ND

I worked at Caribou Coffee part-time for more than a year

ProsReally fun place to work, good hours for a student, some great regular customers, met some amazing co-workers

ConsManagement doesn't listen, no breaks whatsoever, lot of employment turnover, little chance of advancement, wage rate hardly changes.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your staff and do something if there is a problem, and give us a break. Working on the floor for 8 hours straight is exhausting. Give the Supervisors better training.

A nice place to meet people, but poor wages/potential

Team Member (Former Employee)
West Bloomfield, MI

I worked at Caribou Coffee part-time for more than a year

ProsNice place to meet people. Customers are usually regulars and are friendly. An easy job you can kind of zone out at and just grind through your shift.

ConsDepending on your manager/shift supervisor, they can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Tensions can often get very high. Early morning shifts are usually a nightmare with long line, demanding customers, and fighting through sleep.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your team members with some respect and dignity. They're often times the backbone of a shift and frequently doing more work than the shift supervisor.

The community place I Love...If you are a guest and not an employee

Store Manager (Former Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I worked at Caribou Coffee full-time for more than a year

ProsFree 1/2 lb of beans
Insurance after 30 days of work
Great customers!

ConsThe pay is incredibly low for the amount of work you have to put in to have a remotely successful store. They do not give you enough time to complete things in the minimal admin time so you are left completing things at home on your own time. Forget getting a bonus. The bonus structure is horrible and only a small percentage of managers will ever bonus.
Managers are required to work 47 hours a week...This is an underestimate. If you work in a low volume store you are required to be on the floor 32-34 hours a week. Basically you are a glorified team member with many additional administrative responsibilities and no time to do them.

District managers grill you about labor but give no budget for training employees. Turn over tends to be high since they pay their team very low for the amount of work they have to do. Good luck when you have to hire since you will not have a labor budget to train.

Employer health care is unaffordable especially if you have a family.
I did not like the upper management. They tell you what ever they can to make you your little minion. They micro manage to the point that you feel you are constantly failing even if you have good numbers and a happy staff and customers.

Most of the managers are bitter miserable people that got there because they are good at bossing people around. If you want to become a negative miserable person who is run ragged by lack of work life balance choose Caribou. I thought it would be a great place to work, but don’t let their over friendliness to customers fool you they do not treat their employees well at all.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou might want to look into a new business model that compensates their employees for the amount of work they have to do. Stop implementing crazy ideas with high expectations with out stepping into a store and seeing how it will really work.

Silo'd home office, 60 % internal trust via test scores of upper management, sneaky director of Human Resources

District Manager (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Caribou Coffee full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat store environment
Passionate store teams

ConsYou find out what you are reviewed on during your review.
Human Resources director consistently late on programs due to high turnover
Zero teamwork at Director level, zero focus on company vision
Get it in writing. Policies changed without notice, policies ignored but not updated.

Advice to Senior ManagementRevamp HR department starting with Director of HR
Take feedback from store and DM teams seriously. 60percent engagement is a joke.

Overworked and underpaid

Shift Supervisor (Former Employee)

I worked at Caribou Coffee part-time for more than 3 years

ProsI enjoyed most of the people I worked with and the customers and regulars were great. Learning how to make drinks and about coffee in general is a lifelong skill I can take with me.

ConsMy manager constantly slept or spent hours on the personal phone calls, then yelled at me. She would bring her offspring in on their off days and they would run rampant and cause massive disruptions. Human resources did no follow up and working conditions were awful.

Not Enough Employees per store

Team Member (Current Employee)

I have been working at Caribou Coffee part-time for less than a year

Prosdecent pay, flexible hours, you get to meet a variety of people, learn how to make delicious drinks, free coffee, good discount, and the benefits are actually pretty good!

ConsThere was never enough workers to cover shifts, and if you were sick...to bad, you get to work anyways! Also dealing with the snobby highschool kids!

Advice to Senior ManagementHave some part-time on call people for emergencies!
