    Pros

The culture at Caterpillar is great, and it feels like you are part of a very large family. Co-workers are always willing to help, especially in an entry-level position such as this.

    Cons

Job descriptions don't necessarily match the actual job functions. You will wear several "hats" as opposed to specializing in your specific skill area, but this can also be a benefit early on in your career.

    Pros

Laid back, friendly atmosphere, flexible time schedule, hours usually stay to 8 hours a day. Advancement can be quick depending on department

    Cons

Performance-based compensation seems to be more tied to what group you fall in. Caterpillar seems to lack a lot of the amenities other large companies offer (gyms, restaurant options, somewhere to exercise a bit onsite, ergonomics of cubes). Upper management seems to think that shoving a lot of people in one space and giving it a special title qualifies for progressiveness. Locations for engineers can be overcrowded.

    Advice to Management

Recruiting is important and Caterpillar could benefit from making Caterpillar more attractive to new hires. Also, Caterpillar's opportunities for involvement have seemed to decrease as of late.

    Pros

Company reinventing itself again with massive investment in Analytics and Innovation...moving from product leadership to customer intimacy

    Cons

Very imbalanced matrix...funding for cross Business unit, enterprise wide efforts is lacking, some functions are stuck in a time warp, 20-30 years behind. .. (IT , Marketing) Tech and Data stack is a disaster...but this is not unique....arrogance of some leaders is stunning....other, wiser minds are leading the way

    Advice to Management

Update the title structure in org to align with industry norms....division leaders are directors/sr. Directors, dept heads are executive directors....too many layers w manager in titles causes confusion Hire a CMO....marketing needs higher level support Fix the mismatch between finance and accounting....more finance, less accounting! Retire lotus notes and get outlook - ask VPs to set the example and not have their assistants print/type their emails!

    Pros

Very good pay, opportunity to take on different roles, name brand recognition, good community in the Peoria area, and good work life balance.

    Cons

To many levels makes a bureaucratic mess, Peoria would not be my first place to live or tenth, people that suck at their job are not disciplined.

    Advice to Management

Ensure that each supervisor has at least 6 employees answering to them to remove some of the layers. Don't be afraid to discipline someone for their failures. Make decisions based upon what is best for the company, not for your individual careers.
