I worked at Caterpillar full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to move within the company. Formerly great salary and benefits. Good people working very hard. Used to be something you could count on. Financially well-managed and conservative approach.

    Cons

Work/life balance was a myth. Management-level employees were compensated well but expected to live for the company. Culture is stodgy, resistant to change and slow to adopt new ways of thinking, collaborating, and communicating. Post 2008 crash, experience was costly and cut from the company, resulting in great disservice to its future. Benefits not what they used to be, but that's typical of corporations everywhere. A bit Big-Brotherish.

    Cons

    Stagnant, low-risk opportunities.
Company prides itself in reliability, which often correlates to extensive testing and little change.

I have been working at Caterpillar for more than 3 years

    Pros

CAT offers slightly above average pay/benefits.
    Flexible schedule is nice.
Work with some really great people.
    Looks fantastic on a resume.
Good at luring young people in but...

    Cons

...bad at retaining young talent. In a group of 15 the average age is 10 years older than me.

Peoria is a terrible place to be young but perfect to raise a family. Perhaps that contributes to the retention rate.

Slow as a corporation to respond and take action.

    Overreacts as a corporation.

"All roads lead to Peoria" I have been told. Even if you get to leave Peoria you are eventually coming back.

Rotational program is a joke. Dont take the job due to it. Nobody wants to invest any time in a three month temp employee

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work with young people. In that group of young people you have hired probably sits a CEO and a few officers. I was told young people are mobile and leave, and that was the excuse to not pursue following up on retention. Pursue those people.

    Pros

Great place to start career and learn new thing. Once out of CAT, you will see the difference between it and other places

    Cons

Peoria is a small town and the hence not a whole lot to do after work. Too much politics in the place.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Your manufacturing knowledge will grow. You can be your best motivator and if you have a smart boss, he'll let you find your high water mark no problem. The culture is there if your a self starter. I've been successful in this environment.

    Cons

The good ole boy network is alive and well. If you don't go along, you don't move along. My facility has drastically down sized. Nervous employees everywhere and many younger people have left for bigger and better opportunity. Aurora doesn't represent the corp as a whole but this facility is I bad shop both managerially and with asset reduction due to over spending. Closure???

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If this plant is to survive. Get ALL people on board by embracing the lesser crowd. Even you could learn and grow when we all work together. Or, just shut it down so we can move on!

Former Employee - Safety Coordinator in Clayton, OH

I worked at Caterpillar full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The compensation was OK for the work that was required.

    Cons

They hired to many bone heads out of the automotive industry and they now want a union. The people from the unions are compulsive complainers. The people at the office think that everyone in the plant are below them and are on a different playing field. They need to get out there and do some of the work and they may get more knowledge of how it feels to be told at the last hour that mandatory overtime is tonight or for the next few days. Overtime should be selective and not required.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit hiring the Union mind set from the automotive industry. Allow the older people that work they to have a chance to get ahead and not hold them back like I was. They only hired younger people in the quality section and I hand several years experience in that field. I was passed over for a younger crowd.

I have been working at Caterpillar full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Interesting projects and good people. As one veteran told me when I first started, "If you have a good boss you will have a good career; you have a bad boss you will have a bad career."

    Cons

There has been an influx of automotive managers and junior executives. They brought discipline which is good and a negative culture that does not align with professed values

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop talking about the Employee Opinion Survey; that serves to aggravate employees. They know if they choose negative responses, they will suffer all year long...I choose positive responses in the hope that I will not have to hear entire staff meeting devoted to the subject.
