Safety Coordinator position was a great job but some did not have it so easy.

Safety Coordinator (Former Employee) Clayton, OH

ProsThe compensation was OK for the work that was required.

ConsThey hired to many bone heads out of the automotive industry and they now want a union. The people from the unions are compulsive complainers. The people at the office think that everyone in the plant are below them and are on a different playing field. They need to get out there and do some of the work and they may get more knowledge of how it feels to be told at the last hour that mandatory overtime is tonight or for the next few days. Overtime should be selective and not required.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit hiring the Union mind set from the automotive industry. Allow the older people that work they to have a chance to get ahead and not hold them back like I was. They only hired younger people in the quality section and I hand several years experience in that field. I was passed over for a younger crowd.

A Good Company Ruined by Automotive a Industry Management Rejects

Project Engineer (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsInteresting projects and good people. As one veteran told me when I first started, "If you have a good boss you will have a good career; you have a bad boss you will have a bad career."

ConsThere has been an influx of automotive managers and junior executives. They brought discipline which is good and a negative culture that does not align with professed values

Advice to Senior ManagementStop talking about the Employee Opinion Survey; that serves to aggravate employees. They know if they choose negative responses, they will suffer all year long...I choose positive responses in the hope that I will not have to hear entire staff meeting devoted to the subject.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Interesting work, Outdated processes

    Engineer (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsGood money when everything is factored in.
    Locations all over the world.
Enough opportunities in a few different sectors doing very different things.
Strong image and great resume builder.

ConsCompany puts a lot of value in the stock. I understand that all companies have to watch their stock prices, but I can assure you that even though CAT stock has risen close to 20% in the first 2 quarters of 2014 and posted record profits in 2013, by all the layoffs and cost cutting measures that we were taking in 2013, one would think the company was going underwater.
Caterpillar has several processes which seem to make everything quite a bit harder to achieve even the simplest of tasks. From my experience and what I have seen, in the end, when the deadlines start getting close enough, management pretty much abandons these processes (which are supposed to make everything organized) and go to the more straightforward methods.

Advice to Senior Managementstick to the processes. If you put out all these processes, go through the training and when push comes to shove, throw all of them out the door, it really makes these processes a waste.
There are smaller projects out there that get impacted negatively by how much we outsource hardware, software etc. Caterpillar needs to take on the responsibility to move more things in-house and develop its engineers. Slowly and slowly, caterpillar is creating more integration engineers, who will have a broad overview of everything, but would truly not understand how anything works.

Not a place for Ph.D. holder or similar.

    Senior Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsGreat benefit, good salary comparing to company in the same or similar industry.

ConsNot a good place if you are someone very technical. Your talent will not be appreciated and utilized to the extent you would like to.

    Nothing to envy

Parts Records Clerk (Former Employee) Morton, IL

ProsGreat pay and benefits, company name recognition on a resume, you can gain vast amounts of knowledge from multiple departments.

ConsAtmosphere, culture, leadership, low job security (many lay offs), many employees are overworked due to the uneven distribution of work load.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
