    Pros

Was able to go out on the field to perform maintenance and servicing of equipment. When not out on the field, classes were held on how equipment worked and new technology that was being developed.

    Cons

Some of the downsides were that as an intern, there were times when I wasn't learning as much as I could have. That is a part of any internship, but something to keep in mind.

    Advice to Management

Always keep interns involved in as many tasks as possible so that they don't lose interest. Whether it would be sending them out to every site visit, or every classroom lesson, interns are always interested in learning.

    Pros

Good pay; lots of opportunities; world class product development and manufacturing. Caterpillar can teach you a ton.

    Cons

Never go to the Lafayette, IN LPSD facility. They are totally different from the rest of Caterpillar. Management is inbred there; they all know each quite well and make sure only their chosen ones advance. Worse they will actively work against allowing you to transfer to other divisions to escape the madness. Got denied two promotions and blocked from interviewing. Had to quit the company because of the crappy management there.

    Advice to Management

dont make so many short term decisions. Make sure the next round of executives aren't all accountants

    Pros

Finishing up the tractors and getting them shipped out with no issues.

    Cons

Whenever we didn't finish our production numbers we would stay over late to get the job done.

    Advice to Management

I am just looking for any and every outlet that appeals to receptionist, data entry, office administration type field.

    Pros

Generally has a good team of people to work with, provides a wide range of experience with opportunities in many different fields and locations around the globe

    Cons

As with any big company, sometimes suffers from management shuffle. Upper management often makes changes for the sake of making changes.

    Advice to Management

Provide clear direction over an extended time period, not a 1 to 2 year outlook. Limit unnecessary change, especially when it negative impacts the productivity of employees.

    Pros

Great people and good culture. Pay and benefits very competitive.

    Cons

Not a bunch of cons. Big organization has many challenges growing and competing in global markets based in North America

    Pros

Very safety conscious company. The benefits package is in line with other large companies.

    Cons

I have had no opportunity to advance my career. But the mining undustry is in a real slump at the moment.

    Pros

Laid back, friendly atmosphere, flexible time schedule, hours usually stay to 8 hours a day. Advancement can be quick depending on department

    Cons

Performance-based compensation seems to be more tied to what group you fall in. Caterpillar seems to lack a lot of the amenities other large companies offer (gyms, restaurant options, somewhere to exercise a bit onsite, ergonomics of cubes). Upper management seems to think that shoving a lot of people in one space and giving it a special title qualifies for progressiveness. Locations for engineers can be overcrowded.

    Advice to Management

Recruiting is important and Caterpillar could benefit from making Caterpillar more attractive to new hires. Also, Caterpillar's opportunities for involvement have seemed to decrease as of late.
