ProsReally interesting work. The team was very helpful and ready to assist when needed. Also provided the opportunity for hands-on time with machines.

ConsThe structure of the position forces you to become a deep expert in a single field. While it may be advantageous to some, it constrains you from the ability to grow a diverse background

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote more leadership training and a fluid transition between projects and tasks.

Good company to work for if you are willing to move

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsPay and benefits are very good. Huge company so advancement opportunities are there if you are willing to move. Will gain a lot of knowledge in your field and the work is challenging. Our facility was closed but the company pretty much gave us three years to prepare for it.

ConsOnce you hit a certain pay grade you are required to move in order to advance. Can be a very high stress environment at times. The facility I worked at was closed and product moved to Mexico. Unfortunately, I believe that same thing is going to happen to many of the smaller facilities.

Great people, many opportunities, good pay, but culture changing

Engineering Manager (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsI love working with the people. Very focused on doing what is right for the customer and helping each other . People are paid well. Lots of opportunity to move around company. Excellent mentors around the company if you look for them. People genuinely like to help each other.

ConsSeeing lots of turnover, especially in young, high potential people. Not enough emphasis on prioritization. This leads to too much workload for capacity and can lead to work life imbalance and high stress. Independent business units are driving a not invented here mentality that makes collaboration challenging at times (especially in higher level positions). At higher leadership levels, fear of consequences for decisions is driving a leadership that has a hard time making decisions. Large company leads to struggles with bureaucracy.

There is a lot to learn and many areas for growth

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThere is a lot to learn and many areas for growth, they have rotational programs which I would have liked to have been in

ConsThe city of Peoria doesn't have many things to do, yet if you want to grow in Caterpillar, it is the city to be in.

    Research and Development

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsTeam of highly educated and trained professionals and great labs. Very broad range of technologies and machines to work on. Overall benefits and compensation are good.

ConsDue to two slowdowns in last 5 years, much reduced budget for true research and advance engineering work. Too much management oversight and favoritism with growth opportunities.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop slashing and burning research budget to meet next quarter's numbers. Have a long term focus and provide a clear strategy for growth.

    Interesting at this facility.

Section Manager III (Current Employee) Athens, GA

ProsCaterpillar as a whole is a great company to work for. This facility does not represent all of Caterpillar.

ConsDiscrimination, favoritism and sexual harassment at this facility in the shop.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the culture to what you preach but do not act upon. Treat workers like the people they are and you depend on since they build your product. Be true to quality and not pass things for production numbers.

    boring repetitive work

    Assembler (Former Employee) Mossville, IL

    Prospay is average, benefits average

Constoo many chiefs, you can't make them all happy , layoffs are often, forced overtime

Advice to Senior ManagementPay top wages for top work, need bonus incentive for quality and production, keep rules consistent

Very good company, very good culture, great people, fantastic management (really!), very conservate; IT is not valued...

Senior IT Analyst (Current Employee) Peoria, IL

ProsThe corporate values are well communicated and they adhere to them. The professionalism means the people you interact with day-to-day may have different priorities but are easy to get along with over the long haul.

ConsBusiness unit structure leads to internal conflicts and administrative overhead. It's an engineering/marketing/heavy equipment company and values those disciplines.

IT is viewed as a cost and projects seed technical debt from the get-go because they fail to account for lifecycle cost optimization. Cat's compensation of skills are 180 degrees out of phase of the market. Project manager and business analysts are better compensated then technical resources.
