    I have been working at Cenovus full-time

    Pros

    - Similar compensation to its peers
    - 1st and 3rd Friday off
    - Nice commercials and advertisements
    - Charity donation matching program
    - The BOW

    Cons

    - Terrible New Grad Program compare to peers. TAKE ANOTHER OFFER and WALK AWAY! Do not waste your first 5 years of career development with this company!
    - The positive cultures are changing. CVE hired a ton of bad leads/managers in the last 2-3 years.
    - Zero career development, no development support from your leads/managers. They just DO NOT CARE.
    - New grad committee controls your life. Your career goal means nothing to them. They randomly rotates new grads into different roles without considering people's preferences or wants. Majority of the members on the committee don't even talk to you or know your face. Good luck trying to get into the group you want.
    - CVE over hired and now they do not know what to do with their new grads.You are stuck with your uncaring boss doing brainless work for 18 months until you rotate.
    - NO EQUAL OPPORTUNITY. Engineering New Grads> Geologist > Finance > HR > Summer Students > Accounting. So if you are an accounting new grad, PICK ANOTHER COMPANY OR FIRM!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay a little bit more attention to your staff's career goal because New Grads WILL leave once they are done the program.

    Going downhill - not good anymore

    I have been working at Cenovus full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Every other Friday off
    Juice in the kitchens
    Pay and benefits comparable to other competitors

    Cons

    Nepotism very much alive here.
    Stock price continues to decline.
    Management not skilled in managing downturns - company too young.
    The amount of spending by this company is unsustainable.
    Management leans towards hiring friends, not those best qualified.
    Old boys club in play - women largely disadvantaged and hardly promoted. If you are not part of it - this will be reflected in your lack of progression, and lack of bonus compared to the old boys.
    The offices likely to be as empty as EnCana's soon - things can and do change quickly, the Cenovus ego is large.
    You quickly realize it is no better than any competitor out there

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Learn how to manage downturns - it seems sometimes the only thing this company is good at, is spending money.
    Perhaps learn how to work with others who are not old friends or family members.
    Set goals and stick with them. The amount of disappointment when management learned they could not reach every stretch target and deadline is demoralizing. Get realistic

    I worked at Cenovus as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    I entered the environment with much hope, expectation, and excitement. The culture at first appeared to be easy going, and the atmosphere was friendly...on the surface. People were cordial and helpful.

    Cons

    As a contractor I was let go for asking a question to which they thought I should know the answer. I felt as though there was a negative undercurrent in the office that caused much fear in the staff.

    Very low tolerance of people, and poorly managed department. Projects never seemed to have an end in sight, and leadership was lacking. Perhaps this is the reason why so many people in IT are leaving, or have left.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Value the people who have offered their services to Cenovus. Judge less through credentialism, and more through the person's abilities and experience.

    I worked at Cenovus

    Pros

    Vacation policy- a positive and a negative.
    Far too many 55+ people still working there because they get almost half the year off. This leaves little room for advancement.

    Cons

    Far too many people in positions that they shouldn't be in because they are sadly lacking in experience. The company won't hire many experienced people and ends up with poorly trained people lacking knowledge and understanding. It leans too heavily on senior people to train people and it is never ending.

    The company could care less about making money or losing money especially in commercial departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Realize that you are no longer a gas company and stop putting gas people into crude oil positions that they have no business being in.

    Far too many people in the company think it is a country club and don't know what hard work is.

    Some of senior management are great. Most of them are sadly lacking in crude oil experience and knowledge.
