Not bad, but not great.

ProsDecent 401k plan and ESPP. Decent vacation and time off plans. This could depend on your manager. Decent starting salary.

ConsInconsistent performance evaluations. Your manager will most likely have no control over your yearly raises. Most raises barely match COLA. Limited to no room for advancement depending upon your executive. A light of proprietary technologies that have limited to no market value. Very limited health insurance.

Horrible at all levels - that's when i say the least

Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I worked at Cerner

ProsFriendly teammates
My immediate manager was cool

Cons- No work life balance - ppl work till 9am and on weekends.. sometime till 2am on weekdays - mostly because of poorly communicated deadlines from higher management, 60 hour work week and still not much helpful towards getting promoted coz most employees do it.
- Not much talented people in there since the hiring policies are pretty relaxed.
- No timeoff easily ( expect none during 1st 6 mnths)
- they make you work to your bone with little rewards
- poor policies - no overtime pay, no food bills reimbursements as well, you get reimbursed only when a senior person is around
- hr sucks - mess ups in pay every so often
- poor benefits, they stress so much on healthcare being free and taking it to next level - when they have a super expensive health insurance and no so efficient health clinic on the campus.
- super bad software quality even after all this - no testing team. Sometimes when clients stress developers double up as testers for a day or two again working nights.

I found it super annoying at all the levels.
If you have no regards for yourself and no life of your own, this is the place for you.

CEO looses it at company's events every so often and yells at crowd - not something to make anyone wanna look upto him for anything.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat employees as people not easily replaceable robots
Decent benefits
And for God's sake no mess ups in pay - is that too hard or not in company's stupid policy !?!?!

Prosyou get a pay check.

ConsEveryone is out for themselves (especially management) and information sharing is non-existant. Forget trying to learn from each other or colaberation between departments, it doesn't happen.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus more on the customer and less on your profits. If you do that the profits will come.

Terribly Disappointing experience that offers no Career growth and learning

Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I have been working at Cerner

ProsCompensation is good for entry level Engineers

ConsEmployees are overworked.Cerner Corp shows tremendous loyalty towards its old employees at senior levels at the cost of ignoring freshers and lower level employees. This affects the growth of an individual in an organization and also lowers one's confidence forcing employees to seek opportunities outside. This in turn affects the organization as talent is being lost to other companies.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe whole organization in Cerner India needs to be restructured and talented Computer Science professionals need to fill the higher rungs of the Management and not engineers from others streams of Engineering as they wouldn't know what it means to be a good Software Developer.

Only do it as a last resort

Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I worked at Cerner

ProsPay is decent out of college, a little low.
Easy to get a job. Really easy interview questions like "tell me about a time you had trouble making a decision"

ConsIt is pretty much Office Space: The Reality TV Show. Most people work at least 50 hours a week. Even more if you expect to move up in management. We're talking 70, 80 hour weeks for months on end. Weekends become required. Lives become non-existent. Most of the employees hate their jobs and hate the company. It makes for an extremely depressing atmosphere. You're very replaceable. Turnover is really high. Most of the employees view Cerner as a "temporary" job until they can find something better.

They're desperate for good employees right now. The bad reviews have made hiring good people very difficult. As far as I can tell nothing is being done to address this. At this point I'm pretty sure they're complacent with getting mediocre talent because it's cheaper that way.

However, if you're just looking for a job, they have extremely easy interviews. If you have a 3.0 or higher, a bachelor's degree in anything and can answer hard hitting questions like "Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a coworker", then you're almost guaranteed a job.

Take it as a last resort.

Advice to Senior ManagementNo advice, they know exactly what they're doing. Squeeze every last drop out of easily replaceable mediocre employees and drop them for new grads when it's all done.

Be prepared to work like a dog and treated like one

Operations Support Specialist (Former Employee)

I worked at Cerner

ProsCerner's campus is absolutely gorgeous and when your early in your career like myself you feel like you finally got a "big boy" job. First off I don't have a degree but I am close to finishing and have roughly 3 years of experience which they do not pay for. I started out about 8k less then my previous job but took it thinking it would be a professional company with a lot of room to grow. When I got out of orientation which is amazing you feel great about your job but once I got in my department reality sunk in, the managers are crap I mean absolutely terrible people they all were probably assistant managers at mcdonalds or something because not only are they bad at their job but they are rude as hell. Because they refused hire more people on my team everyone was working 55 hours a week and when your only making 30K a year salary your pulling in just over minimum wage. If you have no experience and no other options then work here get the title on your resume and get out like I did this place is awful and I was so happy to leave.

ConsPoorly trained managers, super long work weeks, if your not in IT you are basically trash.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay people for experience and hire managers that actually know how to manage and motivate people not just slobs that have been at the company a few years.

Find a Job Somewhere Else

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsNoble effort to help people through health care applications
Many colleagues who are cordial and skilled

ConsHealth care plan is terrible
Middle management doesn't seem to be well-trained in managing people
Upper management doesn't appear to care about high turnover
Mysterious unwritten rule to work nearly 50 hours or more each week

Advice to Senior ManagementTrain middle management and begin to care about high turnover, which is hurting the company

Lack of growth and employer appreciation

Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I have been working at Cerner

ProsGood company to work for if you are from the Kansas city area.
Job security.
There are some teams that are doing challenging and interesting initiatives, so it would be good to work for them and use cutting edge technologies.
Stock prices are good and good employee stock options.
Lot of college graduates and young techie folks get hired, so the crowd is young and dynamic.
The engineering campus has a laidback and relaxed atmosphere and no dress code to be followed.

ConsToo much process work and structured guidelines in the company lead to less freedom and takes the focus away from innovation to all the process work.
Bad work-life balance and the minimum requirement for working hours is 48hrs/week. You get in trouble by HR if you log less than 48 hrs per week.
No reasonable appreciation or compensation for working extremely hard and long hours in delivering results.
A lot of teams use old and unsophisticated technologies (VC++ 6.0 & Visual Basic 6.0) which provides less growth and marketability of your skills and experience.
Terrible practices of managing releases. Engineers are forced to test their code in 5 different code bases.

Advice to Senior ManagementShow more appreciation for hard work and dedication and value their employee's personal lives too.
Focus more on quality of software rather than pushing things through to make an impression on upper management.
