Love the students. High level admin and board does not understand needs of schools.

    Pros

Students, diversity, pay compared to other parts of NC and SC.

    Cons

Administration. They have unrealistic expectations for paperwork and outside of teaching duties.

I have been working at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Highest district supplement
    Great collaborating teachers
I cannot think of much else. Many people are not happy. Really depends on the school and principal but no matter where you are, your pay will stay the same and the pressure and responsibilities will increase.

    Cons

    No balance.
    Way too many responsibilities
Work load is out of control especially for the pay
    Leaders change constantly
The kids are not well disciplined
Teachers are not recognized for the thousands of jobs they are responsible for.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get it together. Other districts have happy employees, there must be a way to do it.

I have been working at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I have very few behavior problems. Children are mostly from a 2 parent, middle class, suburbs home. The majority of parents are supportive and want their children to succeed.

    Cons

We have helicopter parents and over-parented children. Teachers have too many meetings and very little freedom to plan schedules.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow us to set up our own team meetings. Use e-mail. Use shared google docs. Have parents watch kids during recess.

    Pros

I love interacting and teaching young people.

    Cons

Low standards for the students...lowest grade student can get is 50 even if he does not turn in assignment

I worked at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great if you like working with children. Opportunities to learn more ways to teach. Benefits are OK if you work for NC long enough.

    Cons

Work even on your time off. Not much respect from most people above you, or at least no understanding; especially from those above the principal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat teachers as people, not means to your end. Teachers who are exhausted and demoralized don't make good teachers.Yes, teaching is about the children, but that doesn't make everyone else worthless. Don't know how Morrison is; I worked under Gorman and thought he only cared about himself.

I have been working at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay, benefits, and retirement was the best thing about this company.

    Cons

Teachers getting cut after 4 years of employment and having to struggle to find employment elsewhere. Also, getting paid only 10 months is not good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees and don't treat professionals like children. They went to school to learn their craft.

    Pros

You meet some nice people, nice families, and sweet children. Some of them you can establish lifetime connections with.

    Cons

There are challenging administration teams, petty and catty colleagues, and challenging families and kids. Not to mention long hours and lots of ridiculous requirements.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually follow the advice from surveys instead of sending them, and telling the public that you have teacher input

I worked at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you want to live in Charlotte, it's an option and and opportunity. There are a lot of job vacancies, but that speaks to a lot of turnover.

    Cons

Direction changes with each new leader. Every time someone else is in charge, they come in to reinvent the wheel. It's ridiculous and no one ever listens to anything other than the sound of their own voice. Teacher and staff input is nonexistent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen. It can't be that hard to realize people are fleeing like a movie theater after someone yells fire.

    Pros

There are great people dedicated to children. People in the schools live for kids and work hard to support children. They stay becauee if those children.

    Cons

Leadership cares about leadership. They ignore ideas that are not their own and reward kissing up. Horrible management style us the norm.
