The first year there was good but then came Fiserv

    Senior QA Analyst (Former Employee)
    Norcross, GA

ProsReduced breakfast and lunches. Activity center with pool tables, employee lounge, basketball court and Racquetball. Employee appreciation days. Everyone was friendly. Telecommute options. 401k match. Flexible schedules.

ConsHad to endure surviving three rounds of layoffs when the outsourcing began. Anywhere from two the three jobs will be given to you but you will get a average to below average review because you did not go above and beyond at either one. Kind of hard to do when you are spread thin. No annual pay raises were given. Health insurance costs rose dramatically. Did not see many opportunities for growth.

Advice to Senior ManagementOutsourcing is not always practical. Give employees that are busting it performing multiple jobs something every year.

Fiserv has destroyed what was good at CheckFree

    Software Developer (Former Employee)
    Atlanta, GA

ProsExcellent work-life balance. Good benefits. Interesting work and good co-workers.

ConsIt has recently being acquired by Fiserv. Since the acquisition they have outsourced 50% of software engineering. When I was working for CheckFree there was no career path for technical people. Additionally, it was nearly impossible for technical people to move to different functional areas within the organization. Training was advertised as excellent when it was a joke most of the time.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to estimulate learning within the company. Allow the opportunity for people to move internally.

    Flexibility is the key

    Software Developer Lead (Current Employee)
    Jersey City, NJ

ProsThe best reason to work for CheckFree is flexibility in work schedule. We get to work around our daily life's routine.

ConsBig companies have hard time in getting things done b/c decisions need to be made at the large scale.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake good and sound decisions for the company.

CheckFree is a huge mix of good and not so good.

    Software Developer (Current Employee)

ProsCutting edge technology in the banking industry. Really fun people. Challenging assignments. Really fun people. Free soft drinks. Very flexible management in terms of time off, needing to leave early, etc. No sick days, but all time off days is great...no BS there. A lot of online administration of your HR stuff, which is good...no annoying paperwork/keying mistakes, etc.

Did I mention fun people who "care"?

Devs get full control over their PCs. No hinderance to install software, try it out, uninstall, etc. Devs have ability to stand up their own servers and test out things that they want to. Large "underground" movement of "alternative" applications written by devs in spare time. T

ConsLimited number of opportunities to move around in technical roles. "pigeon hole" mentality to technical staff. Resume's essentially useless, as only what you've done at CheckFree really matters when it comes to developers. Middle Management tends to be unskilled technically, yet managing techies which makes it challenging to evaluate staff effectively. Good maintainable code doesn't matter as much as short term deliverables, which can mean higher maintenance costs....which leads to outsourcing to India through Fiserv.

The cafeteria is not as good as you think it is for $3 a day. The food can be quite nasty at times. Beware of that "benefit". Not getting paid for time off you don't use is a bad benefit.

Can get annoying at times to see more folks hired on to support business relationships than actually fix the technical problems that the business customers have.

The Dublin building has massive temperature issues. 3 year PC cycle is too long for laptops. Devs get crippled by the end of year 2. Productivity drops.

Advice to Senior ManagementStick up for yourselves in the Fiserv deal. If Fiserv really wants to establish a new culture, then they actually need to accept some of CheckFree's business practices. Offer an actual path for techies. Establish actual goals and skills required across the board for a developer to reach a staff, senior, etc. level. Right now it's hodgepodge, and very politically based rather than execution based.
