I have been working at Checkered Flag full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The owners of this company believe that if you take care of your employees, they will take care of your customers. This is why Checkered Flag has been in business for 51 years

    Cons

The car business can be a little stressful at times, but if you like cars and a high-pace working environment, the Flag is the place to be!

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. Happy employees make happy customers.

I have been working at Checkered Flag full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This company has been family owned for 51 years and puts employees and customers first. A very high percentage of the company’s management has been promoted from within. They always provide the necessary tools and facilities needed for growth in every department. The higher ups understand to keep up with current trends and allow for constant new age technology. It's a company really known for Trips, Prizes, and Give a ways!

    Cons

Many hours. The auto business does require a lot of hours though management keeps the work environment fun and many employee benefits for tenure.

    Advice to Management

Keep growing and never stop listening to lower staffs ideas. Continue to provide employee benefits and fun events.

    Pros

Family owned and operated and you can tell they genuinely care about you. Competitive pay structure for Hampton Roads. GREAT incentives for good performance.

    Cons

Far too often ideas are implemented without the proper steps to ensure the success of it.

    Advice to Management

Continue to provide a WONDERFUL workplace! I wouldn't work for any other dealer group in Hampton Roads!

I have been working at Checkered Flag full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I always knew Checkered Flag was a different type of car dealer. When I got hired to come work with Checkered Flag I was amazed by their cutting edge facilities and willingness to embrace a changing business environment. It is no free lunch but if you are willing to show up and listen this company can really teach you a lot about business! The managers are very loyal and care about their employees. I definitely feel like the opportunities are endless here and am glad I choose Checkered Flag over their competition! New car sales is negotiation free which makes for a much more simplistic and painless car buying transaction which also allows for a PREDICTABLE SCHEDULE! If you are looking for sales/business experience I would be hard pressed to suggest a different business.

    Cons

This is car dealership so be prepared to interact with a lot of different personality types. For the most part the other associates are remarkable, but I have found there a few I just don't see eye to eye with. This is normal for any large business environment and I have to admit this is a very minor issue compared with what I have been furnished by being employed here.

    Advice to Management

I think it would be awesome to see a better relationship between the service/sales departments. We all work together and I think it is important that the company work on integration as difficult as it might be.

    Pros

Checkered Flag has always been on the cutting edge in all realms of the automotive landscape.

    • Paid vacation from DAY 1.
    • Health Benefits from DAY 1.
    • 401k benefits from DAY1.
    • Company paid employee appreciation events.

The list goes on and on.

    Cons

Sales departments are open on all holidays but Christmas, Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving, and Easter. Even though they are open for holidays like 4th of July, the stores do close early so there's still time to enjoy.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work. And if the thought of putting a gym in one of the stores ever comes up, it is a good idea.

I have been working at Checkered Flag full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You get to meet some cool people and drive some cool cars. Like some other people said its good if you don't have any education and don't expect too much.

    Cons

First, it's borderline hilarious but also very dishonest that this company obviously has HR, marketing and management staff writing reviews here. You can tell by some of the key words and phrases. And if you actually talk to the Product Specialists, almost none of them would say such good things. I can think of 4 people out of everyone I work with who isn't actively looking for a new job because they hate the scheduling here so much. There's almost no work-life balance. The schedule at my store feels punitive. There's absolutely no excuse for 10-10.5 hour shifts, especially during the week when it's not even that busy. And they're awful hours: 8:45-7, 10-8, 12-9. Recently they're on us to clock out for an hour for lunch, but an hour break in the middle of my 9-10 hour day, is still a 9-10 hour day. I'd rather skip lunch and just work a normal 8 hour shift. No one who is actually selling really has time for a lunch hour anyway, you might miss an opportunity for a sale. But they just want it to look like you're not working as many hours as you are. They'll work you to the bone and they don't care. They don't pay you hourly, so why should they? It's nearly not worth having the occasional Sunday off if you're going to be punished with a 10.5 hour shift on Monday. It burns people out way before the weekend hits and its busier. And it's not busy on Saturday mornings, there's seriously no reason to force your entire sales staff to show up at 8:30am and then work until 6 or 7 or later if you're still with a customer. There's also no give and take with the schedule. You're expected to come in on your day off or come in early or stay late if your customer wants you to (and you need the sale) but then if you want to leave early or come in late, that's not really allowed. You'll be tired all the time from constant long shifts. You'll work late one night and then have to be in early the next morning. The shifts are all over the place and you'll never have time or energy for a life. And they don't care. My manager actually says that if you don't like it, then don't work here. And that's the complete wrong attitude to have with this new process. You'll never keep good people that way and you're going to keep having high turnover and that affects your business. Oh and the health benefits are terrible. Everyone was forced onto a stupid high-deductible plan and it's so expensive to actually get healthcare. It's also really hard to break your draw and make any real money.

    Advice to Management

Make the schedule more reasonable. There should be a morning shift and an evening shift every day except Sunday. That way, people could have mornings to run errands or do chores or whatever some days, and then actually be able to have a life or see their families and get a good night's sleep on other days. Quit burning people out. Go back to offering better health insurance. Actually talk with your Product Specialists instead of trusting your managers and team leaders. Talk with them with no fear of repercussion. Take better care of your employees, and they will take better care of you.

I have been working at Checkered Flag full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you have little to no education, this can be a great opportunity for you.

    Cons

The schedule is all over the place and just awful at my store(s). There is very little work-life balance. And the money isn't very good. They make you promises when your hired, but it's really hard to break your draw and even when you do you don't make that much money. You have to be selling a number of cars that's unrealistic for most people in order to make any money here. They want to keep better quality people but they don't treat people that way. They still treat people like everyone is replaceable so screw you if you don't like something. Especially the schedule.

    Advice to Management

Put people on a more consistent, reasonable schedule. Working different hours every day of the week just makes people tired and feel like they can never catch up. There's almost no time to get anything done in your home or personal life. It's like pulling teeth to get an extra day off. When it's not busy enough for it to matter if someone isn't here.

I have been working at Checkered Flag full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Best brands in the industry. Fantastic facilities. Great local reputation. They promote from within and they are good to their employees. They have many long term employees that are very good at what they do. They have a family type atmosphere for the most part. They have a specific culture and strive hard to always do the right thing both for the customer and employee.

    Cons

High performance company. Not a place for slackers. Leadership at all levels is focused. Productivity and outstanding effort towards customer service is required. Extremely high expectations always. Very fast paced.

    Advice to Management

Sometimes overboard on micro managing insignificant trivial items. Recognize the positive accomplishments more frequently without dwelling on negative aspects to the extent that it robs people of their energy and enthusiasm. Bring back the 401K match that was scuttled at the begining of the recession.
