Great place to start your career

Engineer (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical full-time for less than a year

Pros9/80 schedule (every other friday is off) is great. You can move to a variety of positions in many different locations early on. Hard working but generally laid-back atmosphere. Lots of training and opportunities to learn from more experienced people once you get used to the system. As of 2013, they are eager to send engineers to Saudi Arabia (other international locations exist as well) if you are interested in living internationally.

ConsBecause they are growing so quickly, sometimes the organization and direction for incoming engineers feels sloppy and underdeveloped. You must be very pro-active and work outside of your responsiblities if you want to make the most of your time.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest more in having structures for incoming engineers. Specifically more job shadowing.

Expertise of Chevron and Phillips 66 with the feel of a much smaller company

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical full-time for more than 3 years

ProsChevron Phillips offers great compensation, good benefits, work life balance, and has a 401k matching program along with a pension program. In addition, there are benefits which the company inherits from Chevron and Phillips 66.

ConsGeographic location of some sites leaves more to be desired. Performance Management still needs improvements regarding communicating employee's career path in company.

Advice to Senior ManagementMost people don't want to live in Borger, TX unless they are from the area. Same goes with Orange, Port Arthur, and Sweeny to an extent.

very attentive to individual goals and development

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical as an intern

ProsI had a wonderful experience with this company. Everyone is really friendly and likes their job. They have cohesive and encouraging atmosphere. They are also growing rapidly due to the shale gas boom and it is a great career choice to come work at CPChem.

Consnone that I have noticed for a company of this size

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep expanding to global markets and continue to grow. The safety culture is great and continue to sustain the campaigns for safety as well as diversity and inclusion. I find them to be effective and the employees are willing to always participate.

It’s nice to look forward to work on a Sunday night...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
The Woodlands, TX

I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical full-time for more than a year

ProsI’m a relatively new employee (been here a little over a year), and I’m really enjoying working at Chevron Phillips. My pay and benefits are very competitive with my friends/colleagues who work in my field at other companies. My job is interesting and stimulating, but I feel like I have adequate resources to do my job. I’ve worked at two other companies – one small company and one giant corporation – and the thing that stands out the most to me so far about Chevron Phillips is the family atmosphere (at least that I’ve noticed at my location). The company even has what they call a “fun committee” whose sole purpose is to plan fun activities for employees during work hours, like a tailgate party during football season and a barbeque lunch during Rodeo season. I truly feel like my need for a work-life balance is valued, and that’s something that’s really important to me. As for the culture of the company, what I’ve noticed so far is that there is indeed a strong safety culture.

ConsI haven’t worked here long enough to have anything to complain about, but I’ve heard some employees say it would be nice to have more training.

Advice to Senior ManagementIn an industry that will soon struggle to fill all of the open positions, I think CPChem is well positioned to hire the best of the best. Although the bonuses we receive are huge, it will also be important to make sure that employees’ base pay remains on par with the other leading companies in our industry.

CPChem is a great place to start a career.

Mechanical Engineering (Former Employee)
Sweeny, TX

I worked at Chevron Phillips Chemical

ProsVery good opportunity to interact with management. There was very good company culture, employees were expected to be productive but the work environment wasn't extremely driven. CPChem has a very good mentoring program and they attempt to accomodate their employees career goals. Most employees are satisfied with their company experience. Management provided useful feedback through employment.

ConsThe compensation was good but not quite as much as comperable positions in the petroleum industry. If you're looking for a huge company, go somewhere else. Most of the management team is familiar with the management at the other sites. Not all seasoned employees were thrilled to work with new hires but most were helpful.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire enough new engineers to replace your aging workforce.

Good people, great experience

Process Engineer (Former Employee)
Doha (Qatar)

I worked at Chevron Phillips Chemical as an intern for less than a year

ProsI worked at CPChem as an intern as a process engineer and this was one of my favorite internships. All of the employees (from technical field workers top management) are more than happy to help out and teach, something that's not always the case.

ConsI only worked there for two months as an intern, and I have no complaints!
