I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Wonderful and caring staff. Very energetic, filled with people with knowledge. They gave my daughter great care when she broke her finger and required surgery. Everyone goal was to keep her comfortable and happy before and after the procedure. They checked on us very one during pre-op and post-op. Also provided her with movies to help with distraction.

    Cons

Have not been there long enough to find cons, but if there is any, probably cause might have to pay for the garage. Emergency room gets very busy. Must know how to multitask and have great spirit for the kids and families.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The companies core values are tremendous! The people that you interact with on a daily basis is amazing, the care and support they deliver to families and children is second to none. It is great place to work and learn!

    Cons

The benefits are still good, although not as good as they once were. The work environment is excellent, although in my experience, the morale over the years have dropped. They management is working hard to address the issue.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very high quality of fringe benefits. Unparalleled scientific research environment. Many opportunities for professional enrichment through mini courses, seminars and interaction with career specialists.

    Cons

As a basic researcher, this is a highly competitive environment with little margin for error. Children's does not pay salaries for research personnel and if you lose your grant you're in jeopardy. They demand a lot from their researchers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A lot of the overhead funding that Children's reaps from grant money is wasted on excessive security, frills like automated paper towel dispensers and minute name changes. This could be directed towards supporting research in a substantive way.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It is a great place to work, and it can teach one to humble themselves, by what you encounter day in and day out.

    Cons

Management lacks the skill of interpersonal communication, and does not defend their employees, meaning they will be quick to judge before exploring all areas of truth. Now this is not in every department, and there are some great managers in this facility, however the handful that are not that good can leave a bad taste in ones mouth.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hone in on your interpersonal skills, listen to the little people, and come together collaboratively to work as a unit. Learn to treat people as with respect and not down talk them. This is a great institution, and the people that work here should be just as great.

    Pros

Being a part of such an incredible place is something that drives you to work your hardest because you know your work is impacting something or someone that is in need.

    Cons

    Low pay and understaffed departments

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider the hard work that all levels of employees do and address the need for a higher salary for your employees that are not clinical.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

People are passionate about what they do. The culture of the lab one works in is what impacts the day-to-day work.

    Cons

If you live in certain corridors of the city, it can be difficult to commute to Children's. The hospital is neatly partitioned, so contact with pure clinicians rarely occurs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find ways of bringing together the whole hospital.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Boston full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The best reason to work at Children's is the opportunity for growth. Most of BCH's employees started their working careers there or have been there for most of their working career. There is plenty of room for advancement, and because of the amazing networking opportunities with very notable people you learn more than you even realize!

    Cons

The pay could be better but it is competitive with most clinical assistant positions in surrounding hospitals. Also it can be hard to ignore the hierarchy of positions, at times you are reminded where you are on the totem pole.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Concerns should be taken seriously no matter what position the person complaining holds. Everyone should feel equally important to the team.
