I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fortunately, in the end we're all here for the children.

    Cons

Complete lack of communication between senior leadership and everyone else. An utterly ridiculous amount of disorganization for an organization of this size, which is actually on the smaller side; 5500 + or - employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Refine the practices and processes currently in-place. COMMUNICATE!

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Children's is just that all about children, I see the meaning in my job every day. The work I do is challenging and the people I work with are excellent. Salaries are good but not increasing in pace with the industry. Benefits are excellent.

    Cons

Children's is going through a major management and philosophy change and not for the better. Currently there is a convoluted not well communicated plan to save money and the first targets were our care staff, the front line of our business. Senior leadership continues to want to be involved in every decision yet the Children's network is too large and the leadership is over extended and not effective because of it. Decision by committee is slowing down our organization and meetings are the bane of everyone's existence. Children's could benefit by defining the decision making process and streamlining it. Work/life balance used to be good but it's getting worse as empty positions are not filled.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Delegate and trust those you delegate to. Children's is full of amazing people who are completely capable. COMMUNICATE

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good group of employees all working towards helping sick children. The mission of this organization is great and they are well respected in the communities they serve. Proud to say I work for Children's Hospital Colorado!

    Cons

No work/life balance, mediocre benefits, no training provided for the job, so makes it hard to be successful in your job. Management is very micro-management focused and poor executive leadership. There is a lot of recent change which has led to a not so happy workforce and stressful environment, which is not good for the patients we serve.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start caring about your employees as much as you do your patients and make it a fun environment realizing that people have life outside of work as well.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Providers are dedicated to helping kids. Ongoing education opportunities. Generally supportive of working parents.

    Cons

Upper management is out of touch with those actually helping kids. Poor financial stewardship. Lack of accountability for poor performers. Lack of recognition or appreciation for achievers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk with care providers and listen to what they have to say. Reign in discrepantly expensive testing (Medicaid patients receive much more testing than those with private insurance, even though privately insured patients are billed at obscene multipliers.)

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent Heath care provider to children

    Cons

Lack of respect for employes for employees who are not in management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Jim Schmerling the CEO is excellent and seems very caring. However, the layer of managers and directors, below him do not value their employees. There is a culture of too much micromanagement. Management is to numbers and overlooks the big picture.
Should have a system to obtain feedback from current employees.
Should act on results of the annual employee opinion surveys.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado

    Pros

The kids! Fantastic, knowledgeable colleagues and medical professionals.

    Cons

Have worked for this hospital for 10+ years, have seen a shift from a family type environment to a large corporate business. Less focus on retaining staff and staff satisfaction and more focus now on the bottom line and making money. Many benefits that have provided a lot of staff satisfaction for years have been taken away over the last year or two. Managers are hired with the title of "clinical" manager yet have no experience in the area they are managing. Severe disconnect between management and knowledge of what their day to day staff does.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Front-line staff believe in the care of children.

    Cons

Limited opportunities for advancement; no clinical ladder for areas outside of nursing. Clear that the directors and above get big bonuses while the rest just get told we're struggling financially.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop being so greedy

Best hospital and care for kids / archaic, stale and uninspired non-clinical management practices

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

No better care for kids at all acuity levels.
Most clinical staff terrific at what they do and incredibly caring.
Beautiful, state of the art facility.

    Cons

Non-clinical business is something out of the late 80s/early 90s. ineffective, sometimes, outright unqualified executive management making ill-informed decisions while casting blame on subordinates.

Many, many individuals with a 10-15 year tenure under their belt, received A+ reviews each and every year, and have never once been promoted.

Slim to no chance of promotion within in 90% of the non-clinical depts.

Sub-par family-related benefits for an organization that prides itself on family-centered care.

Surprisingly political, gossip-filled culture for a non-profit company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more strategic in your own business and less reactionary. Don't hire unprofessional, unqualified executives based solely on personal attachments.
