It was there for me when I needed it?

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsAlthough I didn't have a job lined up for me after college graduation, my mentor there did remember me and invite me back to work for her. I enjoyed the tuition remission benefit.

ConsI really didn't care to waste my time working, and so once I convinced my manager to let me work only (and to be paid for only) 25hrs/week, it was smoother, but it did take some convincing.

Research at CHOP is both innovative and collaborative

Research Technician II (Current Employee) Phila, PA

ProsWorking in research at CHOP is intellectually satisfying and awards you the opportunity to work with many amazing, reputable researchers both at CHOP and Penn. Work-life balance is great; as in many academic settings, hours can be flexible and productivity depends on the time you put in.

ConsCompensation should be higher considering city living expenses and there is no direct path to promotions. As in many large institutions, if you need help that requires you to go outside your department, expect your request to take a lot of time and go through many people with very narrow job descriptions--finding the one person that can actually help you is always tough.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompensation should be higher considering city living expenses and employees should be more willing to help each other navigate the bureaucracy that sometimes results from having such a large institution.

    Mostly Positive

    Research (Current Employee)

ProsRewarding mission, excellent clinical care, groundbreaking research

ConsVery little accountability with non-clinical employees, multiple processes with little training or rationale, no infrastructure - every department acts as its institution, no hierarchy, lack of parking

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in IT, encourage testing phases of new systems/processes before rollout

    Great place to work---for some

Registered Nurse (Former Employee) Philadelphia, PA

ProsExcellent rapport amongst (some) co-workers, Great learning experience--you see a lot of interesting cases.

ConsHard on new nurses. Expects flawless nursing. Too many inner-circles to care much about. Management/Charge nurses can be very one-sided and not understanding.

Advice to Senior ManagementShadow the staff once in a while to see what it's like as a nurse.

    Great place to work overall

    Psychologist (Former Employee) Philadelphia, PA

ProsGreat benefits, fun work environment, great to be surrounded by a lot of smart people who really love what they do!

ConsChallenging environment if you have children of your own because there isn't an onsite childcare option, and the "you have to come in no matter what the weather or emergency" is admirable for patient care, but really challenging when you have your own little people to worry about too.

I worked at CHOP as an intern

    Intern (Former Employee) Philadelphia, PA

The internship program in IT allows you to learn about the different departments internally and job opportunities

IT Co-Op (Current Employee) Philadelphia, PA

ProsInterns are treated like real employees, with actual projects and responsibilities. Built into the intern program are workshops and seminars about the different sides to CHOP.

ConsThere are not many young people and it seemed that many people have worked there for almost all of their career. Since it is a large organization, strong communication skills are necessary to make sure you have enough work to do.
