I have been working at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The nursing staff in this unit are truly wonderful to each other, as you often don't have to ask for help, others volunteer it. The nurse practitioners, residents/fellows, and attending physician are a pleasure to work with and encourage nursing staff input. The pay is better than other areas due to the critical care differential (10%). Great tuition assistance program for continuing education.

    Cons

This unit is currently in a staffing crisis, with many changes being made to employee schedules. Management is currently blocking transfers out of unit, so you must be able to endure until the crisis ends, or leave the hospital. A lot of jumping through hoops is done with little to no recognition. Very much a continuation of the college sorority experience with the usual cliques and unfortunate gossip.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge and reward staff achievement. Spend time in the unit to "walk in our shoes". Resolve staffing crisis.

If you don't enjoy playing corporate politics, then Mercy is not the place for you.

I have been working at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics

    Pros

The pay at Children's Mercy Hospital is pretty decent. Working to promote the health and wellness of children is very satisfying. There are ways to advance in the organization, if you play to the right people.

    Cons

Management doesn't care about staff. I had a human resources employee tell me that everyone is expendable. The politics of the hospital is complex and gets in the way of doing a good job in some departments. Nurses and Doctors are treated well, but everyone else not so much. Nurses rule this hospital, so if you go against them, it doesn't go well. Management is in competition with eachother, so sometimes things don't get done, that should. If you believe in the "Mercy Way", things will go well for you at this hospital.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Communicate with your staff!
