I have been working at Children's National Health System full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

-In constant contact with several physicians who would assist in getting into medical school, recommendations, advice, etc.
-Friendly colleagues allows for better communication, accountability and streamlined workflows. Everyone seems to try helping others, which is usually received positively and promotes ownership.

    Cons

    -Commute is TERRIBLE!
-Pay is terrible but took the job for connections. Again, a good stepping stone on to bigger and better things.
-There is little feedback from supervisors, and when there is, its both unhelpful and accusatory.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to lead by example. The "do as I say, not as I do" mentality is not conducive to a happy work environment. Be able to provide examples of how employees can improve and don't just accuse people of wrongdoing without examples; they may not know its wrong.
    KNOW HOW
I will say the team I work with is very supportive of each other; I know of others who did not have a supportive team, therefore, a more negative experience.

I have been working at Children's National Health System part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great environment, the diverse atmosphere is welcoming. Working around a great group of people sets the tone for an outstanding functional network.

    Cons

Faced with the some challenges is the lack of growth opportunities to support future employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great Managers are rare. The best managers build trust with their team, every day, in every meeting, so that eventually critically important and complex tasks can be delegated away.

    Cons

While the faculty are pretty good, many of my colleagues weren't the brightest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more independent thinkers/innovators so laboratories work smarter, not just harder.

I have been working at Children's National Health System full-time

    Pros

Great Pay, Nice opportunities for learning. Great for entry level position.

    Cons

There isn't much loyalty here. They just recently sold the entire IT dept to a third party company with hopes we would continue with a job; Which is why I'm on here in the first place. Children's is the best in the business and will do what ever they need to remain that way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a little more transparent, keeping secrets doesn't create any trust. Invest the money and time you need to the dept. to get the expectations you want. There is a lot of the pass the bucket mentality there and lack of communication. The lack of communication on ALL levels creates a little sense of chaos.

Department managers operate in silos more often than working together as a team.

Implement a mentor program for young professionals.
