Former Employee – worked at Chileda Institute
Pros – Good experience for people entering related fields of special education, social work, etc. Learn a lot from the variety of personalities there - the children have a lot to teach. I wish I could say more.
Cons – The company has undergone major changes in the last couple of years. The focus has shifted from 'family-oriented' to becoming much more 'business-oriented'. Employees are not appreciated by upper management. Pay is not comparable to other businesses in the same field. Very low rate of pay compared to such a high risk of personal injury associated with the job. Very poor communication between administration and floor staff. Administration seems to keep even the pettiest decisions top secret from everyone until the changes are implemented. Promotion is not based on skill, experience, seniority.. it is based on who you are 'friends' with in management. Powers that be seem to be much more concerned with the 'appearance' of a good image rather than ensuring that things really are good with the company. Employee moral is very low. High stress + low pay = not a good place to work!
Advice to Senior Management – Pay attention to the children & families that you serve. Require ALL managment to do their jobs fully, regardless of what positions their family members might hold. Pay attention to & appreciate your floor staff - they are the ones doing all the hard work to keep you in your job position & keep money in your pocket. Give more opportunities back to the kids. So many financial cuts made.. pay the employees a little more, keep them happy. happy employees = happy clients = happy administration. COMMUNICATE! Not all that you do needs to be kept so hush hush. It makes people not trust you. Not like you care. Perhaps a change in topmost management would help. When the parents & families feel the effects of the negative steps you take, then it is time to realize that maybe you are doing something not quite right. Read the book "Good Company". Good points for ALL companies wanting to be competitive in this "worthiness" era. Do it for the children, not for yourselves & your own financial advancement!
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
