I worked at Chubb Corp full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Old fashioned pension with quick vest (3 years). Matching 401K. 3 weeks vacation to start.

    Cons

Micromanagement, ridiculous work load. More narcissists and sociopaths than I've encountered anywhere. Dated technology and methodology. Little to no training. Promotions or even raises next to impossible. Intelligence, experience, expertise or dedication mean nothing, it's all about how long you've worked there. While the vacation is generous, just try using it! Don't waste your time working at this company, life is too short!

    Advice to Management

They wouldn't listen so, no point in typing anything here.

    Pros

Company will be around for some time due to conservative business practices.

    Cons

Many employees are hired based on whether they know someone in management. Management does not promote based on work achievements. Ideas are not taking into consideration from non-management. Software is antiquated and is in dire need of upgrades.

    Advice to Management

Foster a culture that seeks to rewards those who truly earn it rather than attempting to appease someone by hiring their relatives. Also it would be a good idea to implement a system that has 360 feedback so that everyone is held accountable, not just by their superiors.

I worked at Chubb Corp full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Health Benefits are good, salary competitive and I honestly can't remember what else was good about this company, I am sure there are more, I guess the cons have overridden the pros.

    Cons

I worked in Claims IT and was assured by others who came into Claims IT from other departments and who eventually left the group, that the rest of the company is not like this. When I left I had to pull all of the knives out of my back. I advise anyone to stay away from this group. Chubb as a whole I hear is a good company to work for, but I wasn't sorry when they layed me off, the grass is greener on the other side, trust me.

    Advice to Management

Try to foster an atmosphere where in order to get ahead that you don't have to stab your co-worker in the back.

I have been working at Chubb Corp full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good Cafeteria and Good gym. Most co workers are pleasant and helpful. Free Parking. Office supplies are readily available for use.

    Cons

Over whelming micromanagement based on short sighted, "clueless to the actual job Best Practices" Supervisors are "robots" for managements unrealistic whims. Management/Supervisors will throw you under the bus in the blink of an eye. Work load is mind boggling- you would have to work 7 days a week 12-16 hours a day to keep up. When you can't keep up by putting in hours beyond a normal 8 hour day, you get hammered on your review and NO BONUS. VP of Simsbury, CT Specialty claims division is an ego driven, pathelogical liar. Morale is in the gutter. Atmosphere of strong mistrust of management. No management leadership and zero confidence in management from employees. Extraordinary amount of turn over and employee burn out. Highly charged political atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

Fire Specialty Claims VP of the Northeast Zone- Simsbury, CT. sweeping terminations of management and supervisory personnel in Simsbury, CT location. Install employees in to management positions who know the job and can lead. Stop worrying so much about your stock price and worry more about staffing being sufficient to perform the job correctly.

Could do better - UA perspective

I have been working at Chubb Corp full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great business environment, good operational training services, management is dedicated to assisting you in your career.

    Cons

The workload is UTTERLY RIDICULOUS, the amount of tasks needed to be completed in an 8 hour period is unattainable and the worse part is that management turns a blatant blind eye but still expects for you to get the job done and no, there is absolutely no overtime, Compensation....one word, abysmal, Systems are highly outdated. This company is stuck in the stone age.

    Advice to Management

Decrease the workload for UA's, there are items that should solely be the UW's responsibility. Increased salary, you will be surprised at how an increase can be so beneficial to the underwriting process.

After Finnegan took over, Dismal. The climate changed far worse then expected.

    Pros

All pros are prior to Mr. Finnegan taking over. My department encouraged new ideas and your personal and career growth. I had flexibility to manage my projects and our expertise was valued as input in the departments goals. Our department worked well together and supported each other in our areas of expertise. This allowed you to be exposed to all aspects of our departments work and allowed you to grow in different skills that would broaden your skill set. I was proud to be working for Chubb and the department I was in. Our personal time was well respected which made the few times you needed to work on your time understandable. I and I think I can speak for our department did not mind and in fact was encouraged to give that extra when needed because of that respect.

    Cons

After the CEO changed to Mr. Finnegan the climate changed for the worse. your expertise in your field did not matter and was not respected. Often training was given in an unfair manor. All our reviews changed to the negative for the very same high performance. The writing was on the wall that they were justifying our departments downsizing. In the meantime the belittled and abused the employees. Personal time, pre scheduled time off was no longer respected while you keep your commitments. It turned from the best example a company can be to the worst a company can be. The only advantage to Chubb is if you are a minority.

    Advice to Management

If there is any of the old good management left, I suggest you do as some other high profile companies have done to save their company. Buy out the upper management and directors that support this movement. Just as Chubb Institute was destroyed in the name of making it more efficient Chubb Insurance is following the same fate. Wake up and save the company before it is too late.

    Pros

Enjoyed the job at first, was a great "work life balance", challenging, variety of work and able to expand my knowledge and skills.

    Cons

There was a change in Management and supervisors last year, so since that change, the leadership is a mess and all they worry about is the bottom line $. They started to downsize and expect quality and quantity and to give them your life. You work 10-12 hours a day and when your not there, all you worry about is what you have to do. It is not just casualty claims, it is the whole office, somehow they are not in hell. Management wants results and they keep rising the bar higher and higher. Forget lunch and 8 hour days, those days are over at Chubb ,and if you take vacation, you'll come back to a nightmare and will take month's to get out. The leadership and management is horrible, you are just a number there and can be replaced for less. If they do not no like you, the witch hunt starts, till they get rid of you. It is sad, it was such a great place to work and now the leadership has gone to hell.

    Advice to Management

Need to care about the employee's that have made Chubb and stop treating them like a prisoner.

    Pros

benefits, flex time, personal time off

    Cons

Inexperienced management who play favorites and reward obedience over intelligence.

    Advice to Management

Know your stuff, don't rely on popular people who talk a good game but really know nothing. Keep an open mind and listen to everyone. Don't play favorites. It really brings down everyone's morale.
