I have been working at Chubb Corp

    Pros

From a customer's standpoint it is a great insurance company - the customer comes first, if any doubt - their loss is covered. The benefit is always given to the insured. The benefits are very good; and depending on what office you work in - work/life balance is supported.

    Cons

Because it is a good company to work for - people tend not to leave and that limits the opportunities for advancement. There are broad differences in working for the company depending on what department and/or what office you work in. Senior Management/Home Office needs to do a much better job at communicating in general and at communicating a vision for the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to communicate early, more often and better. The gossip grapevine (and just regular individual worry) does more damage than just coming out and communicating to people what is going on.
Also need to communicate their sense of vision - there isn't enough (or any) leadership vision from the Senior Management.
Senior Management needs to reach down to the lower ranks for feedback - especially on what needs to be changed/improvement - and they cannot be any retribution if that feedback is negative (there is a sense among the middle-management and staff that any criticism - even constructive - will mean that not only won't you get promoted, but you will be at risk of losing your job. But reaching down isn't just for the feedback - when new ideas, projects or change is necessary (even something as basic as changing a workflow), Snr Mgmt tends not to include the people who are actually involved in that aspect of the business -- consequently, the change usually doesn't achieve the desired goal because the people with the knowledge to get it done are not included in the development process.

Stable, but boring old school company

    Pros

Stability. Chubb is a very stabile boring company. With the economy the way it is now that is really something that makes you feel good about the place.

    Cons

Chubb is very conservative and sometimes misses the boat due to the old style of thinking. The culture at Chubb is very strong and somewhat unwilling to change. The business customers as well as IT management take a "It's good enough" attitude towards processes and work flows, as opposed to thinking "How can we make this better?" Many of the employees at Chubb have been working there for more then 15 years so as a result they often view change as an evil thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be visionary, stop thinking about what you've done and start thinking about how to be successful going forward.

I have been working at Chubb Corp

    Pros

The best reason to work for Chubb is that the training they provide is second to none. After a certain time with Chubb, employees become very marketable. Also, the pay seems to be very competitive in my department compared to that of other companies although I have not been very succesful in determining the industry average. The benefits are excellent, and management is very relaxed and understanding with few exceptions. Advancement seems to be performance driven rather than political. In all the basics are in place,

    Cons

I find that understanding what your future possibilities are is difficult to determing. Which makes it frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue with the current culture of the company, encourage mid level management to be aware of each employees satisfaction with thier job.

    Pros

The work life balance is very good and the compensation package is quite good.
The working environment is friendly, with a low staff turnover.

    Cons

As the company has focused on its costs base in recent years, the training budget is budget is minimal at best.
Low staff turnover is one reason I would say career growth is less than in other companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on maximising the output of current staff, this can be done without spending money on training.

Former Employee - Senior Underwriter in Toronto, ON (Canada)

I worked at Chubb Corp full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    As an Underwriter:
-Lots of responsibility from day 1
-competitive pay and good bonus potential
-great people; I no longer work there but have many close friends still with the company
    -fantastic training relative to competition

    Cons

    -Difficult to move upward;
    -limited global opportunities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    focus more on non-underwriting, value-add opportunities like integrating all IT systems onto one platform;
take more admin duties off of underwriters' hands and push to other groups. Underwriters should spend as much time as possible with high-level account management and with business development.
