Former Employee – worked at Circuit City
Pros – Co-workers were committed to taking care of customers
Comp and Benefits were good for a retailer
Products were fun to work with
Cons – Shoot from the hip mentality
Directional changes were constant
Culture feel apart after the Best Buy group arrived
No real strategy to compete
Advice to Senior Management – Should have stuck to the original course and let associates take care of customers. Switch to an all hourly environment and the elimination of truly competent sales personnel hurt the company.

Former Employee – worked at Circuit City
Pros – I worked in two groups at Circuit City. The first just sucked the life right out of me. The next one was completely rejuvenating. The difference was the manager(s). If you could get on a team with the right manager, this was a great place to work. I ended up with a fantastic group of people, great management, and the opportunity to learn a bunch of new technologies. It's too bad senior management screwed it all up.
Cons – Unless you had the right manager, promotions were almost never given out. Senior management believed in the mushroom theory of keeping people in the dark.
Advice to Senior Management – There's no point in giving advice now; they already killed it.

Current Employee – been working at Circuit City
Pros – The people. Working with some cutting edge techonology and applications.
Cons – Being in retail the company is subject to and facing the direct effects of the tough economic times.
Advice to Senior Management – Continue to put focus back on the company core competencies - selling consumer electronic goods, excel in customer service and excel in support.

Former Employee – worked at Circuit City
Pros – Circuit City's corporate environment was very relaxed and flexible. If you had a good manager, you could be innovative and do interesting work. This was not true in all departments, but in general, it was relatively laid back. The company seemed to offern many opportunites for growth and advancement.
Cons – As fast growing as the company was, there were many situations where the Peter Principle was in full effect - there were plenty of folks promoted above their experience and abilities. A few good people advanced that way, but you also had some folks in the wrong place. This lead to poor decisions in many departments. Also, the easy going atmosphere led to a lot of speculative projects that didn't fix the core problems of the company.
Advice to Senior Management – Focus on the basics - take care fo the customer, make the shopping experience pleasant. Keep the stores clean and orderly. Make sure there's always someone ready to ring up a sale at the registers.

Current Employee – been working at Circuit City
Pros – Great company (if it survives), good work atmosphere, great location as far as Richmond, VA, good people at work. All levels of management are very supportive and people do care about the company and its future existence. The company is located in a very chic Richmond location and the cost of living is somewhat below the national average.
Cons – Currently the company is going through a reorg, but if it comes out, it will be a stronger player in the consumer electronics space with new management and new ideas. However because of the macro environment and the dearth of financing opportunities, there is significant downside risk to sustain us through the long term.
Advice to Senior Management – Keep the brand going! Do your fidiciary duty to keep the company going as a 'going concern.'

Pros – The work is interesting, the people are great to work with, the atmosphere is fun and relaxed, and unlimited Paid Time Off cannot be beat.
Cons – The very real potential of the company's financial ruin.
Advice to Senior Management – Let's get some new management. What is happening now is not working.

Pros – It is a great place to work. They have a very laid back and casual culture which makes one feel at ease. You feel loved and important. The bosses are usually very wonderful.
Cons – The company is going through a difficult phase now. There is general unease right now and it seems the company is not doing anything to hold on to members of staff who are leaving in droves.
Advice to Senior Management – The senior management should be willing to admit mistakes. They made a lot of mistakes over the last 2 years which are responsible for the current situation. But they arent willing to accept it.

Pros – Circuit City offers excellent work life balance where there is no fixed amount of time off. As long as you do a good job and meet your committements, managers typically approve all time away requests. It is not uncommon for individuals to take up to 5 weeks vacations in a given year. In addition to the great work life balance offered by Circuit City, the people that work at the corporate office are second to none and make coming to work everyday very enjoyable. I would absolutely recommend Circuit City as a great place to work, especially for married individuals with kids who value their time away from the office.
Cons – Merit increases typically do not keep pace with inflation. Promotion increase percentages, typically around 10%, are not consistent with additional responsibilities and expectations.
Advice to Senior Management – More open and honest communication
