I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Access to an unlimited and vast amount of information. Potential for career growth is very positive, due to existing and future technologies constantly being introduced to. You can make your own hours, however see the first comment.

    Cons

Long hours, must learn very fast.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Include one day a week of simply training, or reviewing the latest technologies. Should be a requirement at the Architect level. Although most professionals operating in this capacity , will instinctively seek additional knowledge during their personal time. A day for learning is a nice to have.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Compensation is better than most companies in the area
    Telecommuting is an optional benefit

    Cons

    Work/Life Balance - Always on....
Office culture - if you work from home primarily, you lose out on interpersonal connections that lead to advancement.
Performance Management plan administration needs to be taught to managers along with basic communication skills. Hard to be a high performing employee when placed on a new team. Perception is reality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire 1st line managers with people skills and the abilities to be open to diversity.

    Pros

Flexible work - work from home, flex hours as needed. Good pay and benefits.

    Cons

Cisco used to be a great company to work for and may again be a great company. Right now they are struggling to find their new identity which is causing a lot of stress for the workers. Raises? non-existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep sharing with the Cisco family the direction and how we will get there.

    Pros

Flexible Work Hours and Work Location when working for a manager that embraces the usage of tools.

Continually Squeezed Compensation. 80/20 rule. Senior Management with the exception of the CEO come and make an impact and leave the mess for someone else.

I have been working at Cisco Systems as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Great place to learn and build your resume. I have learned a lot over the years I have been working here.

    Cons

Compensation is the worst and it's Impossible to get a decent raise. I almost feel like I'm going to have to ask for a raise every quarter for the next 3 years to make what I should be making. They will hire people with zero experience and pay them more than you just because they had budget that quarter, but giving you a raise? That's unheard of.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees and make sure they are being compensated equally and fairly for the work they do.

I worked at Cisco Systems as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Comfortable work environment. Flexible hours and many people work from home

    Cons

Reorgs are constant. Bureaucracy strangles advancements. Leadership spends a lot of time protecting themselves and building their areas instead of really doing what's best for the business. I was seriously surprised to see a company like Cisco being run this way and more amazed that they've been successful in spite of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value the employees and the effects your decisions have on them. Lead the company to excellence instead of spending so much of the focus on your own interests and investments.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

-- Ability to get hands on with the latest high end networking equipment
    -- Relaxed environment

    Cons

-- You have to get promoted to get a raise ( at least in the org I was in )
-- I was there 6 years, got great performance reviews and never got a raise

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Inclusion and diversity are great things but don't take things too far and cater MORE to foreign cultures than the local ones.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

good team, decent compensation and benefits, work life balance, internal opportunities to move around.

    Cons

Executives and CEO in particular tend to make excessive amount of strategic mistakes. With time the company started to be running more and more by financial people. "Old cisco culture" keep diluting. Excessive amount of management layers with a middle management simply watching dashboards and doing nothing else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

flatten management structure, observe obvious market trends for god sake, trust engineering talent.
