I worked at Cisco Systems as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Awesome company culture Great growth potential in both technical and management tracks Flexible work environment - remote or in-office rarely matters (depends on the job though) Great products and strong history Encouraged to jump within the company to constantly learn new skills Regardless of what your plans are, Cisco looks great on a resume

    Cons

Location - RTP nowhere as exciting as San Jose for a new college grad, but great for families Heard mixed reviews about compensation being industry competitive HUGE company.. so it takes a while to get things done

    Advice to Management

Keep on innovating and leading Good luck Chuck!

I have been working at Cisco Systems (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work from home, flexible work schedule, lots of smart and interesting people.

    Cons

The ability to manage your own career and relationships is valued more than your skills and deliverables.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of stacked ranking. Put more focus on shareholders.

I have been working at Cisco Systems as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The title says it all: People are friendly. Everyone is very outgoing, and happy to help with whatever you're working on, offer advice, give guidance, their own perspective, etc. Flexible work hours/telecommuting is also a major plus. So much emphasis is put on new talent, and promoting from within, as well as movement across different departments and organizations/teams.

    Cons

...Echo-ing another reviewer's sentiment, that there's always this sense of having to "tune in" 24/7 to Cisco-everything. Maybe it's just a steep learning curve, or a wrong culture fit, but it's something that I've definitely noticed.

    Advice to Management

Good luck with all the changes going on right now!

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The company in general treats people well. The benefits are comprehensive, the bonuses are generous, and the gym is nice. If you are in a good group, you can be mostly isolated from politics and bureaucracy.

    Cons

The company has had a round of layoffs in 4 out of the last 6 years, IIRC. That said, they are saying that they don't want this to be the norm, and appear intent on reducing the frequency of layoffs. My location doesn't have the variety of opportunities for web development that there are in the San Jose headquarters. I have heard stories of some groups having mandatory overtime, but thankfully my management really protects work/life balance. In the past there has been an issue with commitment to Agile, but that seems to be changing.

    Advice to Management

Upper mgmt should keep striking the balance between what has worked in the past and being willing to adjust to future trends. Also, continue with the commitment to Agile, all the way through the sales and financial side.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

From a Services/Technical field, one can and will learn a lot and have opportunities to work with the latest technology and equipment!

    Cons

Some Services organizations aren't budgeted to give every deserving engineer raises yet always has an excuse as to why you weren't fully qualified for one.

    Advice to Management

Back up your employees sentiments don't just pass them up the hierarchy chain

    Cons

Promotion path is very outdated and slow You can feel like you are out on an island because most people work virtually

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

they try to promote a work-life balance although you may work long hours when it comes to certain projects. Great place for flexibility and buffer to learn new stuff. Able to work from home on most occasions. The benefits are excellent! The work culture is exceptional; everybody is willing to pitch in and help out whenever possible. And there are tons of resources to use.

    Cons

there are plenty of work compensation and promotion complaints. Most importantly there have been at least 4-5 job lay-offs in the last decade...

    Advice to Management

Develop an effective plan that will help appease the compensation and promotion complaints. Also ease the fear of employees being laid off year after year.
