I worked at Cisco Systems full-time

    Pros

It had been a great company. Telecommuting is done extremely well.

    Cons

More temporary/consultant workers than direct Cisco workers. Layoffs twice a year - incredibly low morale.

    Pros

Flexibility in work environment, casual attire. Finally just starting to get into 21st century with project tools. Lots of training available though it means nothing to being promoted.

    Cons

Extremely political, tons and tons of processes to follow which create a lot of bottlenecks to do simple tasks. Changes made with little input from those who actually do the work. Constant layoffs,

    Advice to Management

Heavy favoritism toward new grads (20-something) many of who have yet to produce anything after 2 years. Way too many management layers so no room to grow.

    Pros

A place where you can learn as well as teach others. There are lots of room to grow and move around within the company.

    Cons

There is definitely a glass ceiling once you reach a certain level within management. Sometimes the ability to know the right person supersedes the knowledge and qualification for certain job roles.

    Advice to Management

Always look at an employee's performance trend for more than one or two cycles of job focal reviews to determine if individual can succeed in his/her current job role. Then support their growth by providing viable opportunities.

    Pros

    -Good work life balance
    -Flexible with working from home

    Cons

-Low rate of conversion from contractor to full time
    -Management can be clueless

    Advice to Management

Speak with your employees more even if they are contractors; help them grow. Employees get stuck in the same position because managers aren't always supportive.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

A lot attention is looking for top individual performers but I would look more for functional teams and try to retain the team intact. I have seend to many world class teams broken up at the end of a project.
