I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Want to be the #1 IT company in the world. They could do it.

    Cons

When I started, it felt like a start up - could change on a dime. Moved like a sleek yacht. They have grown so large, they can't maneuver as quickly, but they think they can. It is not more like turning a super-sized freighter in a small harbor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the fat in the upper management levels. Listen to the front line team members. Disruption is a good thing when it has a purpose. Disruption for disruption's sake, without strong purpose, just generates frustration.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Top leader in networking: switching, routing. Customer focused. Employee is empowered to take ownership, risks.
Very loyal customer base. Overall quality of product is pretty good.

    Cons

Law of size is catching up (70k+ employee), becoming less agile and too many failed projects. Considered more of a hardware focused networking company than software/application providers. Diluted responsibility in senior executive level of management

I have been working at Cisco Systems

    Pros

Good people- majority of my managers and employees have been smart and self motivated. People care about their jobs, care about their co-workers, care about the community.

Love the moto: "Best in the world, Best for the world". Relentless focus on execution, without losing need to do good in the world.

Great work-life balance. Employees work hard, but flex time is the norm. Very common to have 7am calls, 7pm calls, but also ok to be coaching soccer at 4pm, or at doctor's appt with your mother in the middle of the day

    Cons

Many people have been here a long time- there's a sense of entitlement amongst those here 20+ years. Some complacency, related to above.

Hard to move up- promotions to director level and above seems to require inside connections.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the relentless focus on execution. Great leadership at the top- John is always full of passion and energizes the employees.

Keep up with the senior leadership changes. Love Fran Katsoudas as head of HR- very smart, very authentic, willing to take risks and change the status quo. Hire and promote more women, minorities, young employees.

    Outstanding Company to Work For

Current Employee - Program Manager in Boston, MA

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Quality of work life. Autonomy and flexibility. Empowerment and egalitarianism. Liberal telecommuting policy. Compensation.

    Cons

Somewhat bloated managerial structure. IMHO, many in upper levels of management perceive a need to inject complexity in order to maintain job security.

Siloed and disconnected policy making. Central functions are continually at odds with individual business unit practices. Cisco is a great-great company that treats its employees with respect and appreciation, but leadership has difficulty executing to a clear vision, which can be frustrating and potentially demotivating. There are some very good executives and some not-so-goods (again, IMHO).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As long as Cisco is able to maintain the bottom line for shareholders, there most likely won't be any motivation to acknowledge and address the above criticisms.
