    Pros

The corporate culture is very centered around work-life balance. Employees are encouraged to spend valuable time outside of work to increase attitude and productivity in the office. CWW and teleworking are common options to employees and can be utilized without limit as long as they aren't abused.

    Cons

The City, like any other government org, is extremely big. Because of this, you will get put into a department, and within that department a section, and within that section a team. Your entire workplace satisfaction depends on this team, as you will mainly be interacting with them. Whether you get placed into a good team or not... well, cross your fingers.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to increase transparency and communication with the employees. Especially in the IT industry, a lot of employees lack high level imagery and big-picture understanding. If the managerial staff do not help bolster business thinking, employees will be stuck in the dark with very little room to move.

    Pros

Very by-the-book - respectful workplace policy, fair treatment, politically correct, etc Unionized - job security, nice wages, they will fight for you, etc Good benefits - health, dental, etc Genuinely good people!

    Cons

Hiring all about paper credentials first and and seniority second - demonstrated ability and performance count for nothing. No opportunities for development, except the internal training courses (nothing you would put on a resume). No real reward or bonus system at all, you get your pay, and that's all you get. It can create a depressing environment where the majority of the employees are made to feel like voiceless cogs in the machine, with no motivation to excel or show initiative because it's pointless.

    Advice to Management

You have employees that know the business better than you. Stop hiring outside people and showing undue favoritism when you could use the people you already have. Use them. Develop skills, provide opportunities and projects, give rewards when they excel. The sad part is even when management wants to do this, HR will always do their best to stop it.

    Pros

Good hours and pay. Great for those with a family.

    Cons

Not as great for the overly ambitious. You can work hard but it won't necessarily get promoted because of union rules promoting those that may not work as hard but have been there longer.

    Pros

The City of Calgary is great to work for. The offer a great work-life balance, and professional development. They encourage health and well being of all their staff and give off a great deal of support. Although job security isn't guaranteed, I have never felt like my job was in jeopardy.

    Cons

The City of Calgary tends to be very political in nature, it can be hard to move up in the company as people tend to shift portfolios leaving little room for advancement for others looking to make the next step up.

    Pros

the best things for working for the city would be the learning experience you will receive, also, the city is a reliable work place and a good place to work

    Cons

the city has great benefits, and when you start working within the company you have a chance to be promoted no one will stop you from moving up the corporate latter.

    Advice to Management

My advise to management is to just talk to the employees and make them feel like part of the family at the City
