I have been working at City of Houston full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I have been in my current position for about 8 years. I love coming to work everyday because there will always be something new and different. While working at the City of Houston I have earned about 8 promotions, however, I am seeking to continue to climb my career ladder to the very top.

    Cons

Everyday is a challenge for me because of ongoing and new projects. This is a good thing because it keeps my work load fresh and exciting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listening is key to being a successful manager. Leading by example and always being fair, honest and legal will earn you respect and trust. When training a new employee, being exact and quick to correct their mistake right away on how your day-today business is handle will go a long way.

I have been working at City of Houston

    Pros

The environment can be pleasant, depending on the area. Managers and supervisors will often share information. There's some flexibility in how you tackle assignments.

    Cons

Office politics can overshadow good decision making. The pay is average, at best. Promotions are mostly based on politics and not merit. Poor performers are often shielded.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote hard workers, speak to poor performers about strategies to improve, increase opportunities for advancement.
