I have been working at City of Houston full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are many different entry level positions covering all areas of studies. They train you if you need it. If you stay over five years, they start giving you more vacation time.

    Cons

The compensation isn't great since it is the government. Poor performers are often shielded. Work life balance depends on the department you work with.

I have been working at City of Houston full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Interdepartmental promotions are encoraged, so there's an opportunity to delevop new skills and of course increase your pay. You'll vest in the pension plan after 5 yrs of working there. The health benefits are decent. Union demands across the board pay raises for employees periodically. Typically good work life balance depending on the particular manager or group that you work for.

    Cons

Departments operate independently so there's a lack of team efforts as a whole. Office politics drive most decision making regarding personnel. Merit increases are extremely rare.
