This is my second job, but first retail job and it's fun and fast pace.

    Pros

The employees are friendly and helpful to new workers. My manager is also pretty simple and easy to understand and get along with. Some customers are okay (only give you time to say hi), but a couple like your opinion and help finding items. Decent pay and easy closing routine for a minor at least. Fun work environment. If your a girl you can easily relate to some item in the store and enhance it to get it sold.

    Cons

Long shifts are given to you regardless if you are a minor. My first shift was seven hours with no break. My second shift, my break was close to closing time. I become tired, weak and hungry after standing for 6 hours! Customers throw things everywhere, and it's your responsibility during "recovery". Aka clean every small thing in great detail or your leaving late or risking your employment. Also, long term wormers stay on you for "guesting", greeting every customer and informing them about promotions. But it's OK (manageable)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's unfair to throw new workers in during a busy week. We won't get proper thorough, training, and this upsets customers and employees.

    Pros

50% Employee Discount, Fun Dress Up Days, Accountability, Dress Up Days, Specialty, Fashion Forward

    Cons

Working Alone, Some Management was not educated, Too much drama, not promoting from within, store management not having a great work-life balance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the drama at home! Learn how to hire the correct people for the positions. Also, learn to promote from WITHIN! AND DON'T PROMOTE JUST FRIENDS FOR DM POSITIONS! A lot of the store managers that deserve promotions, you just keep them hanging around, telling them they're fit for DM positions/training positions and then filling it with other people......not ok!

    Pros

I loved working for the company. It has great products and is all over the world, so not impossible to move to another location and continue working. It is slowly catching up technology wise with the rest of big businesses, which is great. Bonus opportunities, lots of company contests and perks for excellent performance. I've learned a lot with this company that has made me successful at other jobs as well.

    Cons

Depending on who your manager is, it may be hard to continue growing with the company beyond store level. Limited hours in the store means you work alone often. Work load can be heavy too, especially when working alone. Ear piercing like crazy too, some customers are just not fun having to do this with all the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Help those who want to advance move into positions to do so, or else they just get bored and want to leave after being used and ignored in a store level position.

    Pros

Love to work with people, make great friends, it's hard work and challenging, something new everyday!

    Cons

The black out(non vacation times) periods are many, pay is not the best, hard to understand the business due to micro-managing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

understand the business as much as possible and accept the fact that you will have no control over much of the business.

    Pros

Seeing new products, having fun teammates, having a 50% discount at both Claire's and Icing, and it's really laid-back!

    Cons

(If you're just a Sales Associate, like me) Hours are hard to come by, and there can be some drama considering everyone is a girl.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I love my manager, she's really made our store pretty much the highest in all of the company. One thing I would ask is to try to work in more hours for Sale Associates. I really can't complain at all.

    Pros

I was promoted from a 3rd key holder to a Assistant Manager to Manager in just over 3 years. I felt they acknowledged my hard work and promoted accordingly. All my managers were always wonderful. I loved my manager as a 3rd key and Assistant, as well as my district manager as a Store Manager. I felt I was very well trained and the responsabilities matched the pay. As an employee, I felt very empowered with the provided resources on site to correct whatever I needed to. Weather it be step by step how to do a certain transation, or how to put out freight. If you are willing to put a little pep in your step and not sit around all day, this a wonderful company to work for.

    Cons

The hours are typical retail hours, even for store managers. Even though we made our stores own schedules, we were required to work certain days, close a certain amount of days, work every Saturday and 1 Sunday a month. This wouldn't neccessarily be bad, but each week was different. It was hard to plan anything personal ahead of time because you didn't know if you would have to work or not. Time off was also difficult to take because they had a ton of 'blackout' dates in which you couldn't use your vacation. These dates coincided with Spring breaks, Holidays, and general busy seasons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More availability of time to use vacation hours. A consistent schedule for all employees for a more even personal/work life balance.

    Pros

Fun environment; even if you don't like little girls, you end up LOVING them every time they come to your store!

Business casual dress code means you feel comfortable at work! Claire's is one of the few retailers who is accepting (and almost encouraging!) of tasteful tattoos and body jewelry. However, gauges are slightly more difficult to get away with; I bought a ton of plain plugs and super glue earrings onto them to keep up with the trends.

Excellent discount on merchandise inspires you to stay up to date on trends. You begin to fall in love with trends you never thought you would before!

Great way to dive into management! I was hired as a third key and within months was promoted up! If you're serious about your job, always bring your a-game, and tell your DSM that you're open to moving, it is potentially extremely easy to move up in management quickly, learning a lot about the management world!

Perfect environment for children and young women! We are allowed to uphold a fun and safe environment, and that includes asking people to leave when they are being vulgar or inappropriate! It's all about being family friendly. =)

    Cons

Unrealistic expectations with tasks: you're given bare minimum hours to do a task that requires at least double those hours! Moving an entire store's worth of merchandise can't be done by two people in three hours.

    Unrealistic expectations with sales:
DSM will rag on you even if you exceed company expectations and standards.
Company insists on an easy return policy yet returns DESTROY store statistics.
You're told to be pushy about ear piercing with every customer and it causes a lot of customers to leave.

Everything is monitored and micromanaged: DSM now manipulates EVERY schedule to please her, despite not knowing availability or schedules of management team. Visual has to be set EXACTLY as corporate wants it, despite local theft patterns or local sales patterns.

DSM has obvious favorites and doesn't even try to hide them!

DSM essentially only ruins morale with employees. Every day, reading her emails or hearing her voicemails just makes you feel hopeless, as though you won't ever be able to do well unless your her favorite.

Very difficult to communicate outside of your district for any reason! Calling the benefits hotline results in a month long wait for a return call, by which time you could no longer be eligible to enroll! Calling HR requires you to leave a detailed message, which makes you feel as though they are going to inquire after the SM or DSM prior to returning your call and hearing your side. No way to notify if a customer left upset, yet a customer complaint can cause you your job.

Benefits are decent but be wary of how they will remove the amount from your paycheck! My first month of benefits, they took the full amount out of BOTH paychecks! Thanks for the warning about me not being able to pay bills.

Claire's is high theft but expects you to prevent it with no additional coverage. Customers learn to steal when you're helping a different person (ie, stuck at the register).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Every customer base reacts differently to visuals! Stores should be able to have more power over making slight alterations to their planograms!

Communication is embarrassing. At a corporation this level, there is no excuse for how pathetic it is to communicate outside of the district.

Customers should not have as much power as you allow them. A customer today will complain just in the hopes of getting an employee into trouble and you are playing into that game. Serial returners know that employees can get into trouble for the returners behavior yet will do so anyway!

Step away from the desk and remember what it's like to be on the sales floor. Demoralizing your employees is a good way to have the company go under.
