    Pros

Large company allows all different types of projects and experiences. Opportunities in the DC area but also all over the country. Amazing wealth of knowledge of employees that is shared and continued learning is encouraged.

    Cons

Large company so it seems possible to get lost in the shuffle. Supervisors rarely take the time to explain the greater picture for employees, except at yearly reviews. Pay could be better, but benefits are pretty good. Long hours, lots of hours. Expect to work 50 hours a week on the minimum. Most weeks are 50-70 hours.

    Advice to Management

Encourage managers to talk more to employees about specific plans for the project and the employees future. Employees often feel that the are just pawns for the upper management with little involvement in their own career planning.

    Pros

Company piles on responsibility if you can handle it

    Cons

See above. They want work to be your life

    Pros

-Excellent connections with the DC real estate market
-Well diversified portfolio including many wholly owned subsidiaries operating under different company names in different sectors. Opportunities to move within groups
-Offices throughout the nation including Florida, Texas, and California
-Clark University is the best new employee development program of any construction company
-High profile jobs, people will know what you are talking about when you build a stadium, convention center, etc.
-Great resume booster, after 3-5 years you can expect a monthly call or email from a recruiter

    Cons

-Management is top heavy (Many VP's and above)
-Operations can have long hours and weekend work
-There is no clear connection between effort/performance and advancement within the company
-Support workforce has limited opportunities for advancement unless upper level managers leave
-Operations workforce answers to a a new executive and VP on each project, easy to get lost in the shuffle
-Very loose and informal review and development process, staff and management are well aware that there is no link between review and promotions/compensation

    Advice to Management

Employees will get an offer for more money and/or less work because Clark is a great company that churns out great people. Many will take it no matter what you do, but some can be retained.

    1. Create a clear and convincing link between performance and promotions. People leave to get promoted because they have no idea if it will ever happen.

    2. Change employee titles to reflect career path and add more steps. Even if there is no raise attached to the title change, it would go a long way to letting employees know that they are doing the right thing and that they are advancing in the company.

    3. Expect more out of your managers, they are your first line of defense when it comes to retaining employees. Many have received no formal training on employee development or motivation and it shows. Make it mandatory.

    Pros

Good healthcare plan and average 401k plan. Headquarters is in good location (Bethesda), therefore easily accessible from DC, NOVA and Montgomery County, MD or PG county, MD. "Well-intentioned" management, although conservative and somewhat frugal.

    Cons

Below average salary. Somewhat conservative management due to closely-held ownership.

The company treats employees well. The management team was very knowledgeable with processes and efficiencies. The projects were well managed and everyone was made to feel like an important part of the team.

    Cons

Employer offered education would be beneficial

    Advice to Management

    Pros

    -Valuable experience
    -Challenging work environment
    -Never boring.
    -Team environment
    -Clark Corporate University program
    -Large organization with many capabilities
    -Smart group of people

    Cons

-Had to leave to get paid what I was worth.
-Worked weekends without compensation or equitable time off.
-Seems if you don't have problems everyday then your job is thought to be easy rather then simply doing a good job.

    Advice to Management

Communicate to your employees at lower levels especially if you approve their time sheets, expenses and responsible for their reviews.

    Pros

I enjoyed the diversity of responsibilities given to me as a project engineer. In addition, you are given a good amount of responsibility as well as autonomy to become part of management in your own way.

    Cons

Honestly, I can not find a negative perspective to the job at this time. I've heard that you can be capped at a certain salary once an individual reaches the title of Project Manager. This usually is the cause for those to seek employment elsewhere.

    Pros

Got to have large roles of responsibility. They pay well for an internship and treat us well with a couple happy hour events.

    Cons

Experience dependent on job site assigned. Much more rewarding to be part of structural construction than close-out.
