I have been working at Cleveland Clinic full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Flexible hours (research), health center, one of the few biotech opportunities in northern OH

    Cons

Institution doesn't support basic science research as much as clinical; more interested in saving $ than supporting research. Spent a ton of money on "engagement"- yet really never followed through. It's all about "looking" like the greatest employer than actually BEING one. (i.e.- if a PI brings in $$- then they can treat their employees as nasty as they like). I have a great boss- but many PI's are not respectful.

I have been working at Cleveland Clinic full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great people to work with. Leadership generally open to individual strengths.

    Cons

Sometimes don't walk the talk. Too much focus on leadership training and not enough on the front line development. Could use more OD interventions on all levels: individual, small group, and organization wide strategies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow for different perspectives and get rid of status hierarchy. Don't discount what people bring to their jobs from former experiences.

A very difficult transition with no "on boarding' process at all and no indoctrination as to the working protocols.

I worked at Cleveland Clinic full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

It was amazing to witness the healing and recovery work from catastrophic illness. The experience enlightened me as to the challenges of administering care

    Cons

    -The politics
    Rule by innuendo
    no forum for conflict resolution
    -Costs before comprehensive care
    -Sporadic infrastructure applications
-Consider deferred salary structure to keep incomes from tax devastation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Listen to more than one viewpoint, weigh the complications of a decision
-Consider patient care first, not just a rhetorical comment.
-DO away with the antiquated management style of governess
-Get a better understanding of manipulative behaviors by rumor and innuendo
-Dispel the environment of fear, it is counter productive to empathy and recovery.

I worked at Cleveland Clinic full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Making a difference in patients' lives is at the heart of what all Cleveland Clinic employees do, which can be a very rewarding experience.

    Cons

The Clinic is very large, it's easy to overgeneralize. Its system is very hierarchical with the usual red-tape and politics. The HR department is often moving at glacier speed. Some career tracks in IT are underdeveloped or not competitive enough. Institutes, as well as their departments, have different cultures. As always, it depends on the people you end up working with whether it's going to be a positive experience.

Current Employee - Staff RN in Cleveland, OH

I have been working at Cleveland Clinic full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Challenges, unique patient problems, world class medical specialists. Education, innovation, teamwork are some of the values and the quality of the care proves it.

    Cons

Long commute from suburbs, pay for parking, unstable upper nursing leadership in recent (10 years) means frequently changing priorities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The weekend incentive program for RNs was discontinued in 2014. This created great personal financial burden for the individuals who were previously in that program. I hope the organizational gains from cutting this program have been worth the burden placed on the individuals.

I worked at Cleveland Clinic full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Magnet Hospital, much opportunity for growth for nurses. Ability to work in a wide variety of settings. Flexibility of schedule.

    Cons

Dysfunctional units have high turnover. Horizontal violence is not addressed effectively, too much she-said/she-said causes management to just say "oh well" guess we will never know what happened.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed out ineffective managers that don't effectively address horizontal violence.
