  1. Good experience, interesting cross-border deals and cases, bad partner morale

I worked at Clifford Chance full-time

    Pros

    - Lockstep compensation for associates, they always match NYC bonus structure - standard law firm benefits: subsidized gym memberships, cars and ~$30 dinners when you work late, great subsidized cafeteria - smart interesting associates with international outlook.

    Cons

    - partners seem like they hate each other, lack of cooperation and camaraderie at the top makes it difficult to see why you would want to stay - work life balance sucks, as does unpredictable nature of your schedule. welcome to every new york law firm.

    Advice to Management

    - US partners put international deals (ones that originated at other CC offices) as lowest priority. That's clearly where the money is coming in, and it gets shuffled off to untrained associates who get berated by the european partners when they don't know what to do. Those cross-border deals should be get much more partner attention. - Partners should try to like each other, and like their work, or at least pretend. They clearly feel like second-fiddle to London, not as the US advance team for a global firm, and it shows, and attitude starts to trickle down to associates.

    Pros

If you want to travel the world doing international work, this is the firm for you. It truly is an integrated global platform where attorneys around the world work together on client relationships. This is not so at US based biglaw firms. You will sleep with your blackberry under your pillow in order to respond to emails from China, but you will be involved in cutting edge work. The attorneys are not only smart, but worldly and and interesting too.

    Cons

The massive lay-offs in 2008 destroyed morale. They seemed to be completely random and attorneys were scratching their heads as to why certain associates were spared. On top of this, US litigation partners took off in droves. With the lay-offs and partner departures, US litigation department shrank from approx 90 attorneys to a skeleton crew of approx 5 (they are now trying to rebuild). During all of this, US management continued to call associate meetings to reassure associates that everything was fine and the future looked great. Do not go here for pure litigation experience. You will not get any experience. You will only draft briefs. But the investigations group (in DC), which is part of litigation, is great. NY and DC work together on investigations, which are conducted around the world.

I worked at Clifford Chance (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of clever colleagues and some of the biggest clients and transactions around. Great training and nice building to work in in London. Good experience and a name that helps a cv.

    Cons

The hours are very long, but this depends a bit on the department you work in. Probably no worse than any other very large City law firm. Despite long hours most weekends were free and holidays generally respected.

    Advice to Management

It would be good for associates to have a clearer career path (eg alternatives to partnership that does not involve "up or out") and also for feedback - good or bad to be given more "in real time" rather than waiting for semi annual review period.

I worked at Clifford Chance full-time

    Pros

Varied and interesting work. You get to work with a great team of highly skilled people. Great facilities and location. Respected world leader, which looks great on your CV.

    Cons

Poor work / life balance. Regular, disruptive and frustrating reorganisations, that don't tend to address and resolve the core issues. Fairly static IT leadership, so opportunities to advance are rare.

    Advice to Management

If the same issues are still present following your Nth review and re-org, then maybe it's time to look at what hasn't changed throughout?

I worked at Clifford Chance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting work, great support, the office is nice and modern, and the facilities, particularly gym, squash courts and swimming pool are great. Many "normal" people work there

    Cons

Long hours, pretty limited prospects. When it gets busy some partners have little sympathy for things kick the need for SOME sleep.
