    stable company outlook, not stressful environment

    Cons

    poor management, too much politics, no career potential for young non-germanies, no bonus, frequent shut-down and layoffs, uncompetitive salaries

    Sympathetic colleagues and fair compensation

    Poor or no bonus plan, mid-level management lacking professionalism, lack of training program for new employees

    Pros

    Good work / life balance. There used to be a number of good things about the company but they are becoming fewer & fewer.

    Cons

    Bunch of old folks management and marketing waiting for retirement. Made too many mistakes, now make up fake numbers. Hypocrisy everywhere. No development or real results from domestic operations. Relying on cheap foreign labor and acquisitions. Unable to adapt to today's market conditions.

    Advice to Management

    Stand up to reality and criticism. Get rid of lying managers. Rise up / hire knowledgeable and experienced people. Stay focused on technology development and NOT on meeting quarterly numbers at the expense of long term investment.

    Pros

    9-5 most of the time. 9-7 during month-end

    Cons

    lack of training or promotion within the department. people with bad skill stay, people with good skill don't stay long

    Pros

    There used to be some good things about the company but they are becoming fewer & fewer. I worked there for 24 years as a field service engineer. They used to care about their employees and do everything they could to keep from laying people off.

    Cons

    They are trying to get by with fewer & fewer employees while reducing or eliminating their benefits and taking away company cars for hard working field service engineers. They lay people off with no notice and no negotiation and target those with the company the longest and oldest with no consideration that their age will keep them from being hired by anyone else.

    Advice to Management

    Start treating your employees right and stop only thinking about the bottom line.

    Pros

    Great Peers, cool products too.

    Cons

    Upper management is extremely disassociated with the lower level. Finance management is the core of their strategy. Unless you have a guardian angel, you will never move upwards and will be laid off once you are at the top range of your salary group.

    Advice to Management

    You have heard it before, and you can hear it any day, if you would just listen. You have a great staff, stop treating them as disposable assets. There are so many great ideas and committed workers, you really need to change your corporate strategy about promotion & retention.

    Pros

    There really isn't any, anymore, since the president and the board of directors keep taking away what little benefits were left. They feel it's more important to make money for the share holders than to keep their employees happy. Coherent's new moto is: "be happy you have a job".

    Cons

    Management has really no clue how to manage.

    Listen to your employees.

    Pros

    There are some good, friendly people working there and the salary was decent. Working conditions were pretty good.

    Cons

    No company loyalty. 401K match was reduced from 6 to 4%. Incentive bonuses, profit sharing, and commissions were eliminated. Older workers are not safe in their jobs or given options even if they have done a good job. People are laid off without any warning.

    Advice to Management

    A company is about more than just profits, it about the people working for the company.

    Pros

    1) Leader in the laser industry - Due to acquisition, not growth. 2) Salary for all positions is very good and highly competitive. Although all other benefits are very lacking - Low to no Profit sharing / 401k, worst Healthcare coverage available.

    Cons

    1) Poor Leadership - All leaders do not think out of the box. Repeatedly see the same problems occur and no systemic change. 2) No Growth Opportunity - This company does not offer ways to advance. Most people here are old and do not plan to move up or leave their position. This also gives you an understanding of why they do not think out of the box. 3) Unclear boundaries between Manufacturing and R&D. They are unable to separate and prioritize these functions. The leadership is bad and so a middle management, you are torn between the two groups.

    Advice to Management

    Have better leadership. Stop changing the goal every 6 months. Learn continuous improvement and create a strategic 5 year plan.

    Good benefits. Training programs are good.
