Great People and Perks! Strange HR Department!

Administrator (Former Employee)
Bellevue, WA

I worked at Coinstar full-time for more than a year

Pros* Lots of Humor
* Colorful Atmosphere
* Free Movies and Snacks
* Generous Benefits

Cons* Very Passive Agressive
* Strong Personalities are Intimidating to Management
* Management is NEVER Held Liable for Their Mistakes...It's ALWAYS Someone Else's Fault
* The Diversity and Inclusion Department Isn't Diverse

Advice to Senior ManagementHire sane people in the HR department. This will trickle down into sane people being hired everywhere. The Buddy hiring Buddy system isn't working. The Culture and Values are terrific, but not if only the underlings are held to that standard.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Good Company

Field Technician (Former Employee)
Phoenix, AZ

I worked at Coinstar

ProsIt is great to be your own driving force and motivation in your day-to-day work. They encourage you to run your "area" like it is your own.

ConsCommunication in this company is pretty poor. Also, in the maintenance area, there are little, to no opportunities for career advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhat I noticed while working for them was that the Senior Management was great and enthusiastic but that they were oblivious to the day-to-day operations in the field. Not totally their fault, but they should hold the management that they hire accountable for the trouble on the ground floor. The lower employees feel very expendable and under valued.

smoke & mirrors

Shared Services (Current Employee)
Bellevue, WA

I have been working at Coinstar

ProsExciting products
Growth peroid
Some bright, exciting individuals
Brand recognition
Enthusiasm within the marketing, IT depts

ConsLack of cohesive direction
Lack of communication across partner groups
A lot of miscommunication / bias between shared groups
Mistrust and confusion about the future/direction of the company
Old guard vs new guard

Advice to Senior ManagementDuring my tenure I've heard many different messages about the direction of this company. Within shared services there is a lack of cohesive coaching / mentoring of the future of this team. The marketing department runs as a pack of mavericks with little restriction. HR is a joke and for a company this size they really need to implement some processes in order to achieve their goals. The start-up peroid is long past but the start-up mentality is pervasive and crippling to their success. Many employees have worked for 12- 15 years and don't have the experience/knowledge to bring this company up to speed on how it should operate with efficiency and innovation intact.
HR tends to rein in the managers and the managers don't trust HR because HR is broken.

ProsFlexibility, ability to make your own schedule. Increase in health benifits

ConsNo advancement opprotunities, company doesn't do a good job at training employees. Change in leadership direction is very common here.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate some REAL advancement opprotunities, make the investment in your employee's training and share some of those stock options. Minimize disruptions with change in leadership

Good company, but watch out for politics

Product Manager (Current Employee)
Bellevue, WA

I have been working at Coinstar

ProsSolid company with a great set of products. A market leader.

ConsPeople are more interested in politics than producing. High employee turnover. The IT organization is a joke.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on gettting people to work together across team boundaries rather than work as enemies. Considering the company is doing comparitively well, it is suprising that many employees are so negative and deeply depressed. Managment theorists would suggest this does not bode well for future success. Normally this would suggest cycling in new talent. But, the new talent does not seem to last long because the old unproductive guard will back stab them before they get entrenched. There needs to be a focus on supporting new talent to reduce turnover and improve growth.

Mixed Reviews

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Coinstar

ProsGreat environment, good work life balance
Middle Management and below are great people to work with
Overall it is a pretty good place to work
Great Parking
Free movies

ConsThe company has a hard time recognizing good internal talent when they see it.
Most of the leaders are not really leaders.
Very Very Very Top Heavy in HR.
Very poor branding in the public market between Redbox and Coinstar
Upper Management, very poor when it comes to communication with the rest of the company
Future forecasting is horrible.
Benefits are okay, but not great.
No recognition from upper management when it came to good performance.
Too many leaders do not understand the true roles of the their reports
Not enough time off

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't get so stuck on processes so much to the point that you let your vision become clouded. Be progressive and forward thinking, move a little, a lot faster when it comes to making decisions.
