I worked at Coinstar (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Casual atmosphere removed from downtown.

    Cons

Annual budget for salaries is less than increases in cost of living, which means effectively you make less each year. Senior management cares little for the efforts made by those in the trenches. Occasional symbolic recognition given (CEO makes a thing out of visiting selected employee in their cube to hand out cash bonus) but the day-to-day acknowledgment and recognition is close to nothing.

    I worked at Coinstar full-time

    Pros

It's rarely boring as you're on the road a lot and you encounter a number of different issues with machines that can occur with the machines.

    Cons

Management was terrible, especially at the executive level as they are not the ones on the road doing the leg work, yet they believe they know how to make things run smoother.

I worked at Coinstar full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    * Lots of Humor * Colorful Atmosphere * Free Movies and Snacks * Generous Benefits

    Cons

    * Very Passive Agressive * Strong Personalities are Intimidating to Management * Management is NEVER Held Liable for Their Mistakes...It's ALWAYS Someone Else's Fault * The Diversity and Inclusion Department Isn't Diverse

    Advice to Management

Hire sane people in the HR department. This will trickle down into sane people being hired everywhere. The Buddy hiring Buddy system isn't working. The Culture and Values are terrific, but not if only the underlings are held to that standard.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

It is great to be your own driving force and motivation in your day-to-day work. They encourage you to run your "area" like it is your own.

    Cons

Communication in this company is pretty poor. Also, in the maintenance area, there are little, to no opportunities for career advancement.

    Advice to Management

What I noticed while working for them was that the Senior Management was great and enthusiastic but that they were oblivious to the day-to-day operations in the field. Not totally their fault, but they should hold the management that they hire accountable for the trouble on the ground floor. The lower employees feel very expendable and under valued.

    Pros

Exciting products Growth peroid Some bright, exciting individuals Brand recognition Enthusiasm within the marketing, IT depts

    Cons

Lack of cohesive direction Lack of communication across partner groups A lot of miscommunication / bias between shared groups Mistrust and confusion about the future/direction of the company Old guard vs new guard

    Advice to Management

During my tenure I've heard many different messages about the direction of this company. Within shared services there is a lack of cohesive coaching / mentoring of the future of this team. The marketing department runs as a pack of mavericks with little restriction. HR is a joke and for a company this size they really need to implement some processes in order to achieve their goals. The start-up peroid is long past but the start-up mentality is pervasive and crippling to their success. Many employees have worked for 12- 15 years and don't have the experience/knowledge to bring this company up to speed on how it should operate with efficiency and innovation intact. HR tends to rein in the managers and the managers don't trust HR because HR is broken.

    Pros

Flexibility, ability to make your own schedule. Increase in health benifits

    Cons

No advancement opprotunities, company doesn't do a good job at training employees. Change in leadership direction is very common here.

    Advice to Management

Create some REAL advancement opprotunities, make the investment in your employee's training and share some of those stock options. Minimize disruptions with change in leadership

    Pros

Solid company with a great set of products. A market leader.

    Cons

People are more interested in politics than producing. High employee turnover. The IT organization is a joke.

    Advice to Management

Work on gettting people to work together across team boundaries rather than work as enemies. Considering the company is doing comparitively well, it is suprising that many employees are so negative and deeply depressed. Managment theorists would suggest this does not bode well for future success. Normally this would suggest cycling in new talent. But, the new talent does not seem to last long because the old unproductive guard will back stab them before they get entrenched. There needs to be a focus on supporting new talent to reduce turnover and improve growth.
