Merchandise too expensive that had to be compensated w/too many confusing sales; overuse of rules and customer service

Floor Leader, Second Assistant (Current Employee) Columbus, OH

ProsBenefits, PTO, great group of gals to work with

ConsSelling poor buying decisions, planograms that lacked visual merchandising skills in which you could not use ones own creativity; not open to new ideas or changes unless it came from the top; too many rules that utilized more labor hours than necessary; the weekly sales in various pricepoints that had to compensate for high end/not worth it pricing; weekly 2 hr management meetings and 2 hr. conference calls; store sets at 6 a.m.; TOO MUCH CUSTOMER HAND HOLDING, once they walked through the door, they only had to stand in undergarments while we did EVERYTHING for them; too many coupons, sales, etc.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt all led you to bankruptcy....

Costs too much to work there

Part Time Sales Associate (Current Employee) Durham, NC

ProsThe clothes are nice and the customer base is nice

ConsYou must buy the clothes in season, which are expensive, and wear them to work. Hard to do on a salary that barely pays the rent.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    sad to see end

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat beginnings, lots of opportunity for growth, fair wages for a small community. The culture of the business and the local community attracted some amazing talent to join the company.

ConsAt some point, things went off track and CWC seemed to loose sight of what really mattered: both for the customer and the employee.

    Great salary...crazy co-workers

Assistant Store Manager (Former Employee) Los Angeles, CA

ProsNice stores, okay discount, close to home, good salary & benefits

ConsStore Manager and Key Holder were nuts! Act nice then constant bad mouth behind ur back. Always had sales to get customers in the door. These older women are NEVER satisfied...nothing is ever cheap enough. So many returns we would have negative $ days. Not surprised they're outta business.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to Store Manager. Mine had the schedule she sent the DM and the real one. Always took 3 days off a week, never worked 40 hours. Ever. Lots of slacking. They would do nothing on my days off and leave all sale set up and merch movement for me when I returned. One of the older co-workers called herself a "pillar of the community"...meh. whatever...she only worked 12-4 a few days a week...and thought she was God's gift to the world.

Good experience. A lot of tasking esp. on visual needs of the business.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsWas a good concept but, co. got lost and economy did not help their situation.

Consco. is going bankrupt, Product was heavy and not ideal for seasonal areas. Buying office should have done regional buying packages for each zone based on weather.

    It Doesn't Matter

    Second Assistant Manager (Current Employee)

ProsPros: That was the past. However, my co-workers are still working with a high level of professionalism & dignity.

ConsThe store staff now, more than ever, has to put on a "happy face" (grit your teeth & smile) with the customer & answer the same questions over and over again! Thank you CWC.

Advice to Senior ManagementShame on you Coldwater Creek! You never paid to attention to what we had to say. Just "delight" the customer, push those credit cards, yada, yada, yada. In an effort to reinvent yourself you lost touch with your "core" customer & this is what's left.

    What a JOKE!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe styles in the beginning until about 5 years ago were great.

Cons- Too many Old Lady looking garments
    - Fit was always changing
    - Quality went down and prices went up
    - LISTEN to those on the forefront

Advice to Senior ManagementWith the closing of the company, PLEASE give the associates in the store a clue as to what is going on with the closing. I've found out more in the last 24 hours by talking with the Liquidation Company than being on the weekly conference calls.

The wrong way to go about it

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCompany is out of business now.

ConsThey kept hiring high-dollar consultants, PR companies and executives to "save the day" rather than letting current employees do what needed to be done.

ConsCould not keep up with the trends and economy.

    Bankrupt Egotistical Executives

Skilled Worker (Current Employee) Sandpoint, ID

ProsSandpoint, ID is fantastic - a wonderful place to call home

ConsIdeas from the "working class" never breached the ego-centric executives who just focused on how they could advance themselves vs. the company - hence the recent bankruptcy.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the people actually doing the work and connecting with the customer - You failed at both - now we all are out of a job.
