Great Culture and people to work with. Too much concern with meeting the bottom line and saving pennies.

    Night Fill (Current Employee)
    Newcastle (Australia)

    ProsBest things are my workmates.
Everyone gets along and works together.
Any issues are usually addressed quickly by Fill Captain.
Pay is decent for part time. Earning more for part time than I did for casual 18 months ago in another company.
    Opportunities for advancement are available.

    ConsMixed communication amongst higher management.
Limited opportunities for extra shifts outside of contracted hours.
Poor performers are held on to.
Advancement opportunities are hard to come by, only the elite and longest serving members seem to qualify for retail leaders.
Weekly budget cuts too often usually leave dept managers scrounging mid week for workers.
Once hired. Almost impossible to get fired. Despite poor performers.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease weekly hours and budget.
    Make career advancement more accessible.
Get rid of dead wood who drag the team down.
Promote from within for higher positions.

    Customer Service Assistant (Current Employee)

ProsDecent casual rate for a retail company, very flexible in hours which is good for the people that need it

ConsManagers play favourites, don't really listen to you and not many opportunities in moving up

Good enough experience for a uni student

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGood pay for the industry, good Sunday penalty rates as well as a discount card. Flexible rostering for uni students.

ConsShort shifts for casuals. Not enough staff always rostered. Lots of 'lipservice'.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't be stingy with staff, ensure that enough staff are always on- good customer service cannot be given if there is not enough staff on.

    Customer Service Representative

    Customer Service Assistant (Current Employee)

Pros- Great place to work while at university; can change roster according to my uni timetable.
    - Pay was one of the best in the retail sector for an under 25.

Cons- As you get older the shifts tend to decrease; will have to keep asking for shifts.

Advice to Senior Management- Don't make your best employees suffer through reduced shifts, they are the hardest working, keeps the best company image.

    Casual store assistant

    Casual Store Assistant (Former Employee)
    Parramatta (Australia)

Pros- Opportunity to experience different kinds of work in a retail store
    - Manual handling and OH&S training provided
    - Promotion within teams encouraged throughout company

Cons- Monotonous, repetitive work, particularly cash register work.
    - Inconsiderate, at times aggressive management
    - Little recognition for hard work or special effort on a task

Advice to Senior Management- Take the time to get to know each employee even at a very basic personal level. Not everyone should be treated like a labourer.
    - Recognise employee efforts.

    ConsMeeting Culture.
Complacent staff not moving on as they're waiting for a redundancy

I worked at Coles Supermarkets for 5 years as a casual employee while I was at High School & university.

    Service Assistant (Former Employee)
    Brisbane (Australia)

Pros- There are some great people at Coles - it was very much a team environment & I enjoyed the culture.
    - Weekend pay & overtime pay rates were great while I was there. I've worked in hospitality jobs where this was not offered & it made a huge difference on my pay packet when public holidays etc came up.
    - There was quite a bit of paid training during my time at Coles. A lot of it was compulsory & was slotted inside of usual rostered shifts.

Cons- The management could be a bit hit & miss; I experienced quite a few changeovers & often it had quite a ripple effect on staff & morale
    - As a casual employee I sometimes had my hours cut if there were budget cuts for the department
    - The pay as a Full Time or Part Time employee was quite low while I was employed
    - There was a lot of pressure on department managers & upper management to stick to budgets & long hours & overtime was expected, but for less than substantial pay

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease salaries & offer more incentives for Departmental managers who really make up the backbone of this company.
