Solid, stable company for mid-level to senior management

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSome of the best benefits (health, vacation, etc) when comparing to other companies
Promotes networking and working in teams
Willing to let employees try roles that do not exactly match their backgrounds

ConsManagement is very conservative and it is extremely hard to make changes to practices already in place
Promotions tend to be based on politics rather than work accomplished
Little focus is put on developing and retaining young talent

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend some time focusing on feedback from the younger employees. Afterall, they are the future of the company - if they decide to stick around.

Tired of waiting to be promoted

    Manager (Current Employee)

    ProsGreat values and culture
    Collaboration, teamwork
    Good salary
    Great shares performance
    Stable brand success

ConsSuccession planning is not transparent. Waiting time for promotion can be exhausting, with no specific feedback received on why there is no promotion. Some people are promoted fast but it is not clear how to get on that fast track

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not demoralize talented employees by promoting the same individuals and ignoring others, unless it is a strategy to get rid of certain people. If you are not satisfied with performance please give immediate feedback. It will help both the employee and the perception of the Company.

Promotions are not based on performance

Senior Manager (Current Employee) Topeka, KS

ProsAfter 20+ years in the company the benefits become a competitive advantage for Colgate when evaluating going to another company.

ConsTired of working hard and not getting promoted even after great performance reviews. Specific individuals got promoted out of the sudden despite complaints from business partners.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop thinking the company is perfect and has nothing to do with regards motivating people.

Very positive but it was time to move once Piliot Plant operations was relcoated from Jersey City, to Piscataway, NJ

Research Safety (Former Employee) Piscataway, NJ

ProsVery comfortable atmosphere. Good working conditioss

ConsMuch of their product interests revolves around the third world countries resulting in less manufacturing and job opportunities here in the US. Much downsizing as well through closures of facilities.

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop more products and be more competitive in the US against P&G and Unilever to draw more homegrown talent; however, their buisness model seems to focus abroad. I have not been with this organinzation for awhile but still have good friends there as well as sometimes keep apprized of their activities.

A very caring company that has changed dramatically over the last years, turning to outsourcing jobs overseas.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Pros1) Good Pay 2) A very caring environment up to 2 years ago 3) Many career opportunities 4) Challenging Work

Cons1) Outsourcing functions overseas to India for substandard work 2) Reduction of NVOs to all time low-more work, less people. 3) Too focused on margin

Advice to Senior ManagementYou became successful because of the people that worked hard for you that you are now outsourcing.

    Highly political.

Associate Manager (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsWith the exception of paid time off, good benefits. Lots of training and employee activities. I had an office when I was there but those have been eliminated recently. Some opportunities for overseas assignments especially if you work in Finance.

ConsExtremely political. One person doesn't like you and you can be gone without knowing what happened. Also, some departments - particularly sales - are the typical "old boys network". Very conservative. Even in the worst heat of summertime, men are expected to wear long sleeve shirts and ties. In some ways felt like high school with all the "cliques" - just look at the cafeteria and how departments have lunch together and talk about other people.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore emphasis on better managers and people development.
