Good place to work if you're not a BP

Finance Trainee (Former Employee) Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic)

    ProsGreat people to work with.
You can be innovative without borders.
    They respect personal education time.
Great company... to put on your resume.

ConsSalary sucks if you're a BP, contract or temporary.
Personal growth is only available if you look for it yourself.
Management is not really there for you most of the times.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't hire BP, contract or temporary people. You're making great potential employees for OTHER companies and creating those so called "career advancement" outside of Colgate-Palmolive.

    Brand Manager (Former Employee)

Pros- a lot of things to learn in the first 2-3 years as entry-level both from other employees and trainings
    - very good implementation of culture & values (can be seen on website)
    - salary as market average + extra-benefits and bonuses
    - high business ethics standard
    - environment where employees feel free to share and discuss any ideas/issues even with top management
    - opportunity to work abroad, though reduced since 'the economic crisis'

Cons- depending on personal capabilities, after 2-3 years from entry-level you might reach a halt in learning if left on the same position/category/project
    - since 'the economic crisis' the strategy is has not been clearly defined and communicated
    - strategy is strongly driven by financial KPIs, not focused on consumers
    - middle managers have 10+ years in the company and are a bit stuck in the 'old ways' of doing things
    - in commercial departments overtime is a given and not compensated

Advice to Senior Management- clearly define and communicate company commercial strategy
    - focus the strategy more on consumers (research), brand communication
    - start building long term plans (vs current very short term) and actively enforcing flawless implementation for long term results
    - less is more

    Mixed Signals

Business Development Manager (Former Employee) Sofia (Bulgaria)

ProsMultinational allowing for growth and development, internal online and on-the-job training. Team work, communication and management skills valued the most. Opportunity for recognition of efforts beyond one's job via YCMAD programs.

ConsSmall office, distant location and little light in the room. (Sofia office) Limited opportunity for further development after end of short-term assignments.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to automate as many tasks as possible to reduce manual data processing and analysis. Consider BI graphs and charts on all levels.

Solid, stable company for mid-level to senior management

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsSome of the best benefits (health, vacation, etc) when comparing to other companies
Promotes networking and working in teams
Willing to let employees try roles that do not exactly match their backgrounds

ConsManagement is very conservative and it is extremely hard to make changes to practices already in place
Promotions tend to be based on politics rather than work accomplished
Little focus is put on developing and retaining young talent

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend some time focusing on feedback from the younger employees. Afterall, they are the future of the company - if they decide to stick around.

Promotions are not based on performance

Senior Manager (Current Employee) Topeka, KS

ProsAfter 20+ years in the company the benefits become a competitive advantage for Colgate when evaluating going to another company.

ConsTired of working hard and not getting promoted even after great performance reviews. Specific individuals got promoted out of the sudden despite complaints from business partners.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop thinking the company is perfect and has nothing to do with regards motivating people.

Tired of waiting to be promoted

    Manager (Current Employee)

    ProsGreat values and culture
    Collaboration, teamwork
    Good salary
    Great shares performance
    Stable brand success

ConsSuccession planning is not transparent. Waiting time for promotion can be exhausting, with no specific feedback received on why there is no promotion. Some people are promoted fast but it is not clear how to get on that fast track

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not demoralize talented employees by promoting the same individuals and ignoring others, unless it is a strategy to get rid of certain people. If you are not satisfied with performance please give immediate feedback. It will help both the employee and the perception of the Company.

Advice to Senior ManagementLatin America is not the only place where the company has talent.
